When they ask you to read the question in English, do they tell you what to write, or do you need to know the answer that you write down?

For example, if they tell you to read "Who was the first president of the United States?", do they tell you to write "The first president of the United States was George Washington", or are you expected to know that and write the correct answer?

Thanks for any inputs!

Hi there...I'm still waiting for my interview to take place but what I've read so far is that, they let you read a sentence, mostly in interrogative form and asks you to write the answer by dictation. Hence, they provide all the information and all you have to do is get familiarized with American places, personalities, and holidays for accurate spelling for the proper noun part of the sentence.

Hope that helps. I got me 2 pages of words from the USCIS website to help applicants both in the oral and written tests. Just get used to them. The lists include verbs, and other things.

Have a nice week ahead.

It is a good thing to know how to read and write the english language here in the US. I am told that they ask questions and you answer them verbally; however you might be asked to read a line or two.

Yes they do ask you questions verbally, and you must answer them verbally. They also ask you to read a sentance in English, and then write a sentance in English.

My question is do they tell you what to write in English, which I think they do, but I'm just wanting to confirm it.

They have you read a question in English, but they tell you the answer and you have to write what they say. This is the "English language" part of the test and is separate from the civics portion of the test. :star::star:

So, NO, you don't need to know the answer to the question they make you read. They tell you the answer... they are testing whether or not you can write down what they dictated to you.

Please remember that you DO have to know all 100 civic questions for the civics portion of the test, which is given orally. (Unless you have waivers.)

The above is not legal advice.

It is either from research or merely my opinion.

Thanks Anya and MsAnn.

Chutima definitely knows all 100 civic questions, and can get through all 100 with only a couple of mistakes.

All in all, I think she's ready for the interview on Wed! I just hope I am! ;)

They will ask as many as ten questions of which you must answer 6 correctly, for my wife and for most that posted here, as soon as they answered the first six question correctly, that was the end of the civics test. Questions to the civics test were given verbally with verbal answers from the applicant.

Ironic they had given my wife an simple English sentence to read as she had to read most of the N-400 application before hand, and verbally answer questions regarding whether she was here to overthrow the government or if she was a prostitute. At the end of the interview, she had to read the oath aloud and sign it. I forgot what she had to read, but was mostly single syllable words. Think it was, "I took my dog for a walk." She was read a statement she had to write down, remember that one. "I am a good cook." That was funny for my wife.

Wife commented the English and civics test took only a couple of minutes, the other 39 minutes she was in there was reciting all the answers we put on her N-400 and explaining the evidence we provided, all that was done in English.

I didn't know jack about immigration when I first met my wife, thought I could marry her and bring her over was so naive. Can sum up immigration in three single syllable words. Proof, forms, and bucks. Could also add patience, but that is a two syllable word.

Nick, as always, you summed it up perfectly!

Well like KikiDoug said, Chutima was handed a piece of paper with three sentances on it, and the IO checked the second one and had her read it aloud.

"Who is the father of our country?"

Then she was given another piece of paper and told to write:

"Washington is the father of our country."

She put a check on each paper and added them to our stack of paperwork!

Thank god the interview is over! :D
