I am applying for IR-1 for my wife and we will be interviewing in Montreal.

1) Is the visa issued at the embassy good for multiple entry?

2) I learned from the forum that the green card will be mailed to our residence in the states after one month, does it only get mailed after you crossed the border with the visa?

1) Yes, you bring an expresspost envelope to the interview with you and they will mail it back to you. Generally 1 - 2 weeks after the interview. It, along with the stamp you receive at the port of entry, is good for multiple entries

2) Gernally 1 month yes. Once the visa is issued, you have 6 months to cross the border to the US using your immigrant visa. Once you cross the 1st time, the CBP will 'activate' your visa and send your packet to USCIS to indicate that you have crossed. Then the greencard will be issued.

Good luck.

Thanks canadian_wife. Didn't realize I need to bring an express post envelope. I got the impression that the visa was issued on the same day or next day in the embassy, is that no longer the case?

That has not been the case for Montreal in quite some time. Many VJ Canadians have asked to retreive their visa same/next day but to no avail

Good luck.

Thanks again. Do you have any idea why we weren't told to bring the envelope? I think most people who aren't aware of this won't have envelope with them during the interview.

I'm assuming from your response that you used an attorney for your visa. Attorney's aren't always up on what exactly is needed for the interview. My suggestion is to read the guides linked above and best of luck to you.

Thanks redmen99. I checked the guide but I am not seeing any mentioning of us having to bring express post envelope. Any idea which guide mentioned this?

The VJ guides are generic guides which target couples from all countries.

I assume you would have read the Montreal consulate's website regarding visas prior to your interview.

Return of Passports and Visas

Passports Returned by Mail

Visa applicants must bring a pre-paid XpressPost envelope with them to the interview. These envelopes are bought from Canada Post and are not available for purchase at the Embassy. Visas are generally delivered within 5-7 business days of the interview.

canadian_wife, you are a lifesaver. I didn't read the Montreal consulate's website, I thought everything I got in mail and the guides here are as complete as it can be.
