If a US citizen gets married abroad, how does he change his civil status in US? How does he proof he is married with documents from a foreign country?. How is that marriage legal in the US ? Does their birth Certif. change ? Or just because they applied for a CR1 or IR1 Visa the government would update their data base ?

How does that work ?

A foreign marriage is legal in the US in most cases, with a few exceptions (proxy weddings must be consumated first for example). You can use your foreign marriage certificate to update things such as your life insurance policy, health plan in work etc, but will probably need a certified translation of the marriage certificate. There is no need to "alert" the US government in any way of the marriage, until this becomes neccessary for other reason (tax filing, filing for avisa for the spouse etc). The birth cert does not change, it never lists marriage status.

Me: Irish/ Swiss citizen, and now naturalised US citizen. Husband: USC; twin babies born Feb 08 in Ireland and a daughter in Feb 2010 in Arkansas who are all joint Irish/ USC. Did DCF (IR1) in 6 weeks via the Dublin, Ireland embassy and now living in Arkansas.
