If you do a google search on "obtaining food stamps" you will find a wealth of information. The social security administration generally handles these things. A link I found is here: http://www.socialsecurity.gov/pubs/10101.html

You can also check with local churches as they have programs sometimes to help people who are down on their luck.

You make less than 5,000 a year between the both of you? I believe that is the minimum requirement to file taxes.

Social Security has nothing to do with the administration of benefits such as food stamps etc. Such benefits are offered through the Department of Human Services of your State of residence.

Most States require that a recipient of services be a US citizen. USC sponsors of aliens (USC spouses in the case of couples here on Vj) can avail themselves of such services. The alien can often times be counted as a household member. Aliens are usually unable to obtain Medicaid or other health related services.

That is not quite true. If you read the info that I posted social security handles some types of food stamps etc... and while that may not be the exact place to go the site I linked has all the info on it and how to apply for it.

SS does not approve applicants for food stamps nor do they administer the benefit. It appears they are willing (as caseworkers) to help Social Security recipients complete an application for the benefit, which the recipient then takes to the local DHHR office.

Funny... tell that to my mom who gets hers from them directly. It says right on the page certain applicants and those receiving SSI benefits get their food stamps from social security. Beside the fact, he asked for info and I gave it... doesn't really matter if they do not handle every applicant.

Look....I don't have a dog in this fight. If your Mom receives SS and gets her food stamps at that office, then good for her.

Since 99.9% of aliens who have just come to America via a family based visa probably aren't SS recipients, then they wouldn't be needing the services of the Social Security Administration to apply for something that is basically a function of state government?

The answer to that question is up to your employer and the type of health plan you have. I was able to add my husband to my health insurance without a social security number. Some insurances will require the spouse to have a social first....others will let it slide until it is received. Check with the HR department of your company.
