Hey guys!

My wife and I just got approved and we're trying to figure out if we're eligible for any discounted health insurance since we're married and neither of us makes enough money right now to even have to file for taxes.

And how does the whole food stamp thing work in the states?

I don't even know if we're eligible for any of that since I JUST immigrated to the states but hey, asking doesn't hurt right? :)

You can also check with local churches as they have programs sometimes to help people who are down on their luck.

You make less than 5,000 a year between the both of you? I believe that is the minimum requirement to file taxes.

No, no, clearly he's right. I mean, we ALL live in a perfect situation. NO ONE is EVER laid off, fired or told their service are no longer required. We ALL have pocket money to do with as we please. We ALL have 2 cars, 4 TVs, and 3 story house in the suburbs. Honestly, I agree with him. I mean, how can you not. Asking for a little help is sooooo unamerican, right? I mean, what they should do is not ask for help, and just get deeper in debts. ESPECIALLY if they have children. Can't teach your children that "sometimes in life, you have to rely on other people's good will and that, maybe, if you're lucky, you'll have a chance to repay them". Nope, can't do that. That would be stupid... Right?

In case you're retarded, that was sarcasm.

MonkeyArtic, I agree that one should do what they can first, and then seek help, but needing a little help is nothing to be ashamed of. So, don't listen to people like Abdulinlove. Clearly, the only love he has is for himself.

How did you qualify to come here. You have a lot of nerve asking how you can collect welfare that I support with my taxes.

# Legal immigrants are barred from all federal means-tested public benefits for five years after entering the country and barred from SSI and food stamps until citizenship. They are also barred from all federal means-tested public benefits for five years.7

# Benefits available to immigrants include school lunch and breakfast programs, immunizations, emergency medical services, disaster relief, and others programs that are necessary to protect life and safety as identified by the attorney general, regardless of immigration status.

...and if his wife...the USC...qualifies for assistance, are you going to be just as judgmental towards her? Geez man...do you think you are the ONLY one who pays taxes? What qualifies you to pass judgment...the fact that you're a friggin taxpayer?

hey there!

we dont intend to live off of food stamps. this is a temporary situation. i wanna be a tax payer like everyone else but until i get a job that enables me to do that we were hoping to get some help on here about food stamps. and yes, i am attending job interviews. i am not a lazy couch potatoe lol i was also asking because i know that i cannot collect benefits because ive just immigrated but can we get food stamps since my wife is a US citizen? she's obviously got rights too. i absolutely believe in good karma. we might need help now but ive never needed help before and i know that this is a temporary solution so...you might be the one needing help one day.

also does anyone know anything regarding the health insurance?

I am not sure about food stamps but you might want to check about health insurance with which state/county you live in. Here in Indiana they have Hoosier health plan for low income families which is pretty good but we can't get it now as its only is for US citizens. So do check with your county office with it and see if your county has something good to offer.

Social Security has nothing to do with the administration of benefits such as food stamps etc. Such benefits are offered through the Department of Human Services of your State of residence.

Most States require that a recipient of services be a US citizen. USC sponsors of aliens (USC spouses in the case of couples here on Vj) can avail themselves of such services. The alien can often times be counted as a household member. Aliens are usually unable to obtain Medicaid or other health related services.

I am the UKC and when I lost my job (was out of work for 3 months) I was told that in NYS you can get health insurance under the healthy family plan i didnt even bother to apply for it as I I knew I wouldnt be out of work for long but I know that different states have their own rules (in NY every child regardless as to whether they are a USC or K4 visa holder is entitled to Health Insurance also food stamps are available to you too but only for the child not the adult immigrant if thats of any help to you) I would suggest getting in touch with you local employment office though to see if they can help you find employment because it really will do you confidence the world of good to do something positive and try to get out in the working community (hard I know but it is possible)

Good Luck with what ever you do

Almost done with it all

That is not quite true. If you read the info that I posted social security handles some types of food stamps etc... and while that may not be the exact place to go the site I linked has all the info on it and how to apply for it.
