Dear VJ members,

I am sure someone here would know the answer.

Are LPRs eligible for unemployment benefits?

Say I worked in the same place for 18 months and get laid off... I lived within the same state for 18 months.

I noticed that unemployment insurance is not withheld from my paycheck and that tells me I probably am not eligible... I work at a private University.

Thanks for your help!

You are eligible for employment, it's an insurance that you and the company pay in case you become unemployed. You can check with your states EDD office, but LPR or Citizenship has no bearing on your qualification for unemployment as long as you work in the past 4 quaters, about 12-18 months, in this case you should be fine, go ahead and apply if you do get cut. Good luck

Some employers are exempt from the fund so you don't pay into it and you don't get to collect from it. But if you pay in you can collect. The deduction may be hidden in your check stub under some heading

This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this.

As an employer I pay both Federal (FUTA, an employer only contribution) annually, and state unemployment quarterly. I've never deducted this expense from my workers. I'm sure you are eligible.
