People are losing jobs everyday people....The lines at the local feeding holes (Costco, Sam's Club, Wal Mart) are not indicative of the economy....The unemployed are not there...

People need to understand the crux of this issue......

So let me understand this crux with your assistance. In a bad economy, the stores are just as busy as during a good economy? Of course not. When there are MORE employed people, there is MORE economic activity at retail and wholesale stores. My reference and joke is, when I see a shopping mall or store as a "beehive of activity", I catch myself saying, "Recession, what recession?!"

Oh, BTW, as a matter of comparison. Go to a Detroit Costco or Walmart or Sam's and ask the managers if their stores are doing better or worse than 5 years ago...

Actually, in the corporate sense, these big box stores are realizing an increase.....yet, the average consumer is realizing a reduction.....Especially the unemployed. Two of the local supermarket chains in Kansas City for example, are offering USDA Choice NY Strip at $4.99 per pound this week.....Last week, it was chicken breast or tenderloin at $1.99 per pound.....Fresh, brand name and so forth....Go figure....

Do you think that movie theatres and beauty salons are seeing an increase or decrease in the shopping malls during this tough economy?

Well I'm glad you understand the point I am making. To say that businesses do better in a bad economy overall is taking an irrational position that one cannot hang a hat on. God Bless.

If laid-off workers who have settled for part-time work or have given up looking for new jobs are included, the unemployment rate rose to 17 percent, the highest on records dating from 1994.

All told, 15.1 million Americans are now out of work, the department said. And 7.2 million jobs have been eliminated since the recession began in December 2007.

The department said 571,000 of the unemployed dropped out of the work force last month, presumably out of frustration over the lack of jobs. That sent the participation rate, or the percentage of the population either working or looking for work, to a 23-year low.

The unemployment rate would have topped 10 percent if the labor force hadn't shrank, Fabbri said.

Older, laid-off workers are dropping out and requesting Social Security at a faster-than-expected pace, according to government officials. The Social Security Administration said earlier this week that applications for retirement benefits are 23 percent higher than last year, while disability claims have risen by about 20 percent.

Meanwhile, the number of people out of work for six months or longer jumped to a record 5.4 million, and they now make up almost 36 percent of the unemployed -- also a record.

Could you argue that Wal-Mart and Sam's are still comparatively busy because people can no longer afford to shop at their favorite medium-scale stores?i know i haven't bought anything for myself in a "real" store for a long, long time... :(

I can tell you from what I know that Wal-mart is still kicking butt, however, even they are being catious. Locally, some plans for expansion have been put on the back burner. Walmart is no longer hiring full time associates as a rule, but is still actively hiring part time and peak time associates. Management rules have changed recently to make better use of salaried employees. Work rules and scheduling restrictions for hourly employees have also been tightened to avoid paying overtime.

From my perspective, people have less in their cart, that's for sure. One thing I have noticed, is the stocking up on sale items at all stores. Here in Kansas City, we have 4 or 5 supermarket chains, like in most cities. Every week, the sale papers are delivered to all residential addresses. I follow the sales for beef, chicken, lamb and so forth and always have. In the last months, I have noticed "hoarding" of these items, to the point where stores are putting limits on purchases. Come to think of it, I need to buy a deep freezer...
