Another good reason not to get a lawyer

Yes but a K-1 and a CR-1 or K-3 at the same time doesn't make sense.

no, one cant do a k1 or a cr-1 or k3 at the same time!! If they are married, odds are that they filed the cr-1 and k3, which files the 129F! Sure one could blame the lawyer, BUT no one cares more about ones case then you!! So that person should be looking into things! We found the lawyer first then VJ (costly mistake,lol) even though we had the lawyer, I knew things she did not because of VJ!!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied,that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

We put together our petition and then J went to a lawyer in boston for a $55 consult, just for her to review the package and she said we look like we have a solid case, and I think it was worth the $55. I might consult again if I I don't get approved or get stuck in limbo. Immigration law is different from administrative processing.

I have the pleasure of knowing an "immigration specialist" who isn't a lawyer, but he helps people with Canadian immigration, and I picked his brain yesterday about the process here just in case we have to go the other way first and apply to Canada. He gave me some advice on what would be good proof of relationship. I certainly knew much of it before because of VJ and uncommon sense, but it was helpful to hear it. And while I don't think he's a lawyer, I imagine that he does help people with wading through the confusing process.

Doing this process requires SO much care in reading everything and looking at every detail. Your worst enemy is assumptions. Immigration lawyers see so many cases, I imagine they can't "pick up on" all specifics of any one case, and if people don't know to tell the lawyer some relevant information, they can't know it.

And yeah, there are plenty of sloppy people out there. I think many of us probably found this place because we're pretty meticulous and able to look at details. I read EVERYTHING.

Heck, I read cereal boxes and VCR (oh boy that just dated me) manuals, of course I would find VJ!

I was so thankful when I came upon this site.

What is better than actual EXPERIENCE?

I mean I had a lawyer too and he was worthless. In the end we got what we wanted but

I felt like I did alot of the research and question answering myself.

They do this everyday and their tolerance for anxious, overly inquisitive whiny petitioners is NILL.

We want answers and the only one they can really give is ....you got to wait it out.

In retrospect I would have attempted to it myself and saved alot of money.

Agreed. We paid $3,500.00 just for the lawyers fees and they didn't do SQUAT. They gave me the forms, I filled them out and brought them to them..they looked over them, made me sign them and then that was it.

AND we got an RFE! :lol: Pretty funny really now that I look back on it.

Peachey and I came here because the lawyers I talked to quoted me 5-7 THOUSAND dollars for the process.

I love Peachey, and if it really did cost that much that's what we'd do... but those prices are just ridiculous.

You guys here saved us so much money, time, and hassle (I hate lawyers).

Plus, you all keep me sane while we wait eternally for stuff to happen. :)

Montreal Interviewer: "What do you have in common with each other?"

Peachey: "We're REALLY weird."

Montreal Interviewer (incredulously to me): "Do you agree with that?"

<I think back to several days before the interview. Driving through the country, passing a field with cows...>

Peachey: "MOOOO! MOOOOO! Does this make me weird?"

Me: "No, well yes. Here, let me roll down the windows so they can hear you better!"

Peachey: "MOOOOO!!!!"

<back to interview>

Me: "Yes, yes I do."

Plus Varba has an uncle who's helps refugees immigrate. He doesn't know much about Fiance, or marriage visas but I will be using his assistance for my Naturalization for sure!

08/04/2010 - Green Card received (and it's actually green!)

05/30/2012 - Sent ROC packet to VSC

06/08/2012 - Received NOA1 for ROC (Dated 06/04/2012)

Naturalization paperwork is very easy!!!

We had a consult with a lawyer and he quoted us $5k for a K3, including AOS. Ridiculous.

Montreal: BEAT!!! Approved!!!!!

A friend of mine was going through the K1 process about 2 years before me with her Irish fiancee. Her process took about 10 months because of waiting for the lawyer to get back to her. She told me the advice that she heard from her lawyer and I remember it scaring the ####### out of me at the time. She told me all about how the interviewers will sit you down and ask you every dirty detail about your relationship to test if you're real... and also that the lawyer was asking the same kinda questions, so I should be prepared. :huh: And to take a huge book of evidence proving you're a couple.

Of course at the interview, they only asked me about where my fiance worked and about how many times we met.

I'm not going to ask my friend who his lawyer is... it's none of my business.

I also don't think they're bogus, they probably don't deal with simple immigration cases too often, and deal more with people who have criminal records, deportation, things like that.

A friend of mine was trying to bring her son from Nigeria. I kept asking her how its going and she would refer to something the laywer had told her. the answer would always be something like my lawyer sent them an email. my laywer said the case was touched. my lawyer said she is waiting for the response. I told her to bring her paperwork and we made phone calls spoke to people made an infopass appointment. They told us contact NVC we did that in lass than 3 months her children were here. The day that I went to see her kids I tolld her to call her lawyer to ask for a case status on her kids... Guess what the lawyer said...................................................

"I SENT THEM AN EMAIL ASKING WHY ITS TAKING SO LONG AND THEY TOLD ME THEY HAVE A BACKLOG,"

we asked for a copy of the email or the response and she told my firend she couldnt give it to her because she was behind on her payments.
