I guess this topic is really dead but I found another voice in the wilderness :

Wasn't there a situation in the '70s where some Arab terrorists hijacked an airliner in Israel and the Israelis set a deadline for the terrorists to come out....and when they didn't the Israeli military destroyed the whole plane, hostages and all, because they didn't want the terrorists to take credit for it?

They said something like "Hey, if our people are going to die, we'll do it ourselves. We'll show the terrorists, you take over our aircraft, you're going to die."

I don't know if this is a factual story or just an urban legend to show the resolve of the IDF. Either way though, that attitude is definately there.
