I've been here for only 4 months but it feels longer and the one and only thing I miss from home is Greggs sausage rolls. I don't even really eat meat but they were my weakness. And yes, I know they aren't even classifiable as 'meat' but damn they are so good. If only there was a way to have them shipped over :(

I can relate to that and other things too, I miss a lot of foods from home.

Nothing like Gregg's sausage rolls! However, if you do a search you can find several UK food sites that import lots of goodies. I found a British import shop just a few towns away from where I live in Connecticut and they had a pretty decent selection of sausage rolls, sausages, pies and other things (not cheap though).

I was missing sausage rolls and pork pies when I got here too. Luckily a VJer pointed out that this place was nearby: http://www.australianbakery.com/. Their stuff is pretty good.

sausage rolls?

maybe is similar to 'pigs in a blanket' ?

these are sold in many places, but if you find a czech or polish bakery - they MIGHT make them..

klobaschneike ?? (wrong spelling, i'm sure ) - some say its a type o kolache... but i disagree...

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

What about Gregg's cheese and onion pasties and a fresh white loaf that doesn't taste like cake and isn't stale!! They used to do a lovely egg mayo sarnie as well. I miss a ton of things but luckily the stores here in Northern VA really cater for the Brit.... I currently have hula hoops, bisto, chocolate fingers, birds custard, marmite, sandwich spread, kerrygold butter and cream crackers.

Oh I miss sausages too.....I have had to make my own sausage rolls for my daughters school lunches......most of which my hubby and his work mates have devoured! I have also resorted to making my own cornish pasties .....I miss nice crusty bread and gravy granules, what i've used over here doesn't compare...and my speciality dish, toad in the hole just cannot be made without proper english sausages

I would also love some dark chocolate digestives (sainsburys low fat variety) and chippy fish n' chips. I'm sure I could make a fortune over here opening my own chain of chip shops  My favourite name (not original but still good) is The CodFather!

The only bread I have that comes close to english bread is a french Bread baguette that they do in our local walmart, which is crusty and tastes good. They also do one in the bakery section that you can take home and bake, maybe you could try those.

I miss english sausages too and i would also like to make toad in the hole but its impossible here.

Near us there is an irish pub lol, and I had fish and chips there, not nearly as good as home but a fair subsitute lol.

i find it amazing that there is so much you cant get here, like Hienz salad cream, well I have managed to get it but at a price, branston pickle i found too 4 dollars a jar lol.

I agree and english Fish and Chippie would go down well here captains ds is a poor substitute lol.

This thread makes me smile knowing there are other people in my situation! I miss chips and cheese more than anything! Now, I know that its possible to make them here, but they just don't taste the same when they're not from a proper chippie!!!

Bring Greggs to America!!!!!! Seriously that's all I ever ate for lunch.

ok i miss:

1. chocolate that actually tastes good : I bought a snickers today and it tastes completley different to that chocolatey goodness i'm used to in the uk

2. Bread that is actually bread and not a ton of sugar..I bought some bread here from these people who said there supplied Jamaican hard dough bread, now i'm used to it just coming out of the oven still warm, smelling like heaven. this bread was stale , even though it had been frozen. My hubby and step son still devoured it saying it was delicious.!!!

3. drinks you can dilute like you do in England. Robinsons would go down a treat.

4. proper tea, i can get it from Walmart but I have to pay through the nose for it.

5. Bakeries ( like Greggs), Butchers, and any shop that isnt homogenised mass capitalism.

I think i'll stop now. lol theres more but it breaks my spirit to carry on.
