Hi everyone! It's been months since I have been on this site, but now I am in need of a bit of help.

My husband has received his 2 year green card and won't have to apply for his 10 year until 2007.

We are however, moving from New Jersey to Washington state in 3 days. The problem being, we have no place to live yet! We are moving in with my sisters for the first few weeks, then finding a place with a monthly rent between Tacoma and Seattle for a month or two, and then finally settling in an apartment in Seattle itself.

So....how should I go about contacting USCIS about our change of address? Do you think it will be okay to just not mention it until we move into our permanent apartment in a few months time? I can't imagine them attempting to contact us between now and then, but I don't want to piss them off either.

Also, by moving to another state now, will all my future paperwork for the 10 year card be sent to the USCIS in Seattle or will it stay in Jersey?

Thanks for any help! I hope everyone on here has been having success in their application processes!

Maybe you should consider getting a P.O. Box until you are stable? Have all mail forwarded to the box and then file a change of address when you have your permanent address. And of course follow up with everything.

Well, the good thing is that we are living with my aunt right now and she will still be here after we move. So anything we may receive in the mail here, she can forward on to me.

Do you think it's worth it to do a change of address form to a P.O. Box in WA for the time being, and then once I move to the permanent apartment do a SECOND change of address form? It feels excessive, but I just don't want to break any rules that could jeopardise our future. I am not sure how strict they are in enforcing the penalties in not notifying them within 10 days of moving.

If you think about staying with your sister and renting an apartment for a couple of months as a steps in searching for a new place, what would you do? Will you change your DL each time?

Even if you report each new address, in case USCIS wants to contact you, they will most likely send a notice to the New Jersey address.

the USC sponsor is required by law to notify USCIS of any and all moves within 30 days of the move, or there could be a $$$ fine. See the instructions on the I-865 address change form. The immigrant is required by law to notify USCIS of any and all moves within 10 days. No fine tho. Strange that. Seems backwards.

Yeah, it'll be a bit of a pain to send them 5 address change notices, but better safe than sorry IMO.

And always always always follow up by telephone with USCIS to make sure that they've updated your address on your file and have USPS forward your mail.

If I were you, I would go on the safe side of things and send in the form to change your address. Even if you have to do it twice in a few months time. You are moving states so that is a big move. If you were moving non permanent for a few months within the same state I wouldn't change it but since you are moving states I think it's a good idea.

AR-11 does NOT change your mailing address but it is required by law to report your move.

Check it out, but I recall that AR-11 has a way to record a temporary move. AR-11 is ONLY for reporting your whereabouts to USCIS.

You can change your mailing address via a new petition (I-751) but it does NOT comply with the rule about reporting your address. They go to/happen in two, unrelated places.

The PR is required to file AR-11, and the Sponsor is required to file I-865. Relevant laws are cited in the links below.

To successfully change your mailing address, from the Dept of Overkill:

-file AR-11 as required by law. This does not change your *mailing* address, but it informs USCIS where you might have been, at one time. Just do it, it's the

law http://uscis.gov/graphics/howdoi/address.htm

How Do I Report a Change of Address to the USCIS?

AR-11 does not generally generate a NOA receipt. Send by trackable mail.

-Copy of AR-11 to any LOCAL or district office where you might have a file. Include a letter saying: change my mailing address

-copy of AR-11 to any Service Center where you might have a file. Include a letter saying: change my mailing address

-Phone call to 1-800 MisInformation line with the request: please change my mailing address

-file I-865 for USC Sponsor as required by law. You *may* get a NOA for this one and it *might* change the Sponsor's mailing address. Or not.

-file Change of Address and Mail Forwarding with the USPS. Your USCIS mail *might* get forwarded to your new addy. Or returned to USCIS, you never know. Unfortunate side effect: the PO sells your new address to bulk mailers and you are now back on every junk mailing list under the sun.

http://www.obviously.com/junkmail/

Do-it-yourself: Stop junk mail, email and phone calls

30 days later

-Follow up phone call to 1-800 to see if address change is captured.

-Cross fingers and keep an eye on processing times and when you expect to be contacted. Don't let it go for ages and then say 'dude, where's my case?'.©

OP can file AR-11 to note a temporary move and again for a permanent move when ready. Mailing address can be changed when filing I-751, otherwise, there is nothing USCIS is going to mail you in the ensuing year+. Your file should be in storage now until I-751 is filed. I-751 will be adjudicated at the Service Center unless you're called for an interview. If you are, you'd be notified via the Seattle office.
