Superpower?

A 14 trillion dollar economy, dude. No-one comes even close.

Say what you like, this country has tremendous wealth and economic power.

What the country pumps dollar wise means nothing.

It's what's in the pockets of the average Joe that counts. The average Joe doesn't have squat. The average Joe is living in a crumbling country. Just look at NYC, a financial powerhouse yet the city is dog ugly. I have seen cities in 2nd world countries that are actually more modern and well maintained than NYC. Which says something considering that NYC is also the better of list of cities.

The average Joe in America has a lot more dough than the average Joe in other countries.

(Except Australia, of course - we all know the streets are paved with gold there and people

have more money than they know what to do with.)

If your neighborhood is "crumbling", maybe you should consider moving to a better

neighborhood. More affluent neighborhoods have higher property taxes and their

infrastructure is just fine.

I don't think NYC is "dog ugly" either - I think it's a beautiful city. Can the infrastructure

be improved? Absolutely.

That said, an unlimited ride NYC Metrocard costs $89. A monthly travelcard for Zones 1-9

in London costs £261.20 = $418

If the choice is between the occasional rat and unwanted smells and paying $418 for a

subway ride instead of $89, most people would choose the rats.

Organizers of grass-roots 'pink slips' campaign expect to exceed goal of 5 million

...an innovative campaign to alert Congress of widespread grass-roots opposition to massive new spending plans has delivered a message to Congress – "Are you listening to us?" 1 million times

"This looks like a historic effort" said Joseph Farah, editor and chief executive officer of WND. "I'm quite sure nothing like this has ever before been undertaken."

"There is a revolution brewing across this country," she said.

Widespread? Historic? Revolution? Danno-logic at it's best!

A Monthly card in Melbourne is $91.73 and that covers an area 50 times NYC and includes Trains, Trams and Bus services; which are all almost new.

Compared to London and numerous other first world cities, yes NYC is a ####### hole and in many areas literally. The roads are abysmal, the subway stations are old, the streets are old, and the buildings still have the 1920's dull look. Heck 8 years later and the city cannot even build a tower that terrorist knocked down.

You're also looking at the wealth of those in Manhattan. NYC let alone Manhattan represent 2.6% of America; Basically zero. How about traveling around the country to see what people are really worth?

Edited by Booyah!

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Indeed, you should.

Why? Your wealthy. You should be able to charter a jet.

I've seen America so I know what I am talking about.

Then again those from NYC seem to think their city is America, so I can understand, the skewed point of view.

I'm saying you should - maybe you'll stop talking ####### about the roads and infrastructure,

as if all of the US had the same crappy roads as DC and NYC.

It's not what you know, it's who you know.

The roads here destroyed yet another 1-year old tire. Got it replaced yesterday. Driving can get so expensive in the Dirrrrrty Jerz.

Dude, your starting to sound like Pike. You lived in the UK so you should know perfectly well what I mean in terms of the quality of infrastructure and roads.

I have had to change three windshields since moving here. Never changed one in my life in AUS.

I don't change windshields unless it's a major crack. I learn to live and love the small ones. I even get my inspections done at private places run by fellow desis who let that ish pass.

Jersey is a prime example. Some nice areas but it also some of the worst areas in the country. Is this the wealthy some are telling me about?

Were not even civilized, or wealthy, enough to clean and maintain our roads but we want to throw out superpower. Anyways...

The Great Wall of China wasn't built in a day.

You know what's interesting about Jersey, the median income is so high yet the place is still a dump. Only in America.

People are clearly more interested in having more money in their pocket than actually fixing up their country. It's just a pity that the country has become like this. It sure as hell is not the attitude in any other first world country. Only 2nd and 3rd world. I don't disagree with Mark on this point but Mark seems to believe its a good thing, whereas I don't.

The ironic thing about this map is that the states with the lowest income, also have the largest number of people against health care reform.

Here's the math for this "widespread grassroots campaign":

There are 535 Congresspeople.

1,000,000 pink slips have been sent:

1,000,000 / 535 = 1,869 people.

1,869 people have sent pink slips.

The goal of the pink slip campaign is to send 5,000,000 pink slips:

5,000,000 / 535 = 9,345 people.

9,345 people sending pink slips is the goal of this "widespread grassroots campaign."

I will leave the rest to the reader.

5,000,000. That's about 7% of the electorate that voted in the last midterm election. I think you can be pretty sure that most people who go through the trouble of mailing their congressman vote. Elections are very often decided by less than a 7% margin.

Of course, no one can say how many of the people sending pink slips are typically swing voters (probably not many of them, admittedly). I don't know why 5,000,000 voters expressing an opinion is laughable though.

If you'll notice, the article did not say that five million people sent pink slips. The article said that five million pink slips have been sent. There is a big difference. If you do the math, only 1,869 people sent pink slips. Each of those 1,869 people sent 535 pink slips.

Also, if one million pink slips were sent, it means that, on average, each individual Congressperson received a pink slip from three-and-a-half of their constituents. For a U.S. Senator from California, three-and-a-half of their constituents represents just over 0.00000001% of their constituents.

If there are 169 million registered voters in the U.S., and if 1,869 people sent pink slips, these 1,869 people represent just over 0.000001% of registered voters. Of course, that would assume that each and every person who sent pink slips was a registered voter. If some of the people who sent in pink slips were not registered voters, then the percentage would likely drop below 0.000001%.

I hope this clears it up for you.
