NOt sure how it works back home... but over here, we don't just have "one election" we have all kinda of representation.

From Dog catcher to Police chief to Senator and Congress..... and even president.

My friend, it's a great country over here, even if you don't care for the president, you still have others who represent you in this system of democracy.

We don't have a "winner take all" system where the president calls the shots.

In fact, there are two other branches which hold just as much power as the presidency.

Learn

Live it

Love it.

What you have it s bunch of bullshit. It's why the country is crumpling and the laughing stock of the developed world. Under the parliamentary system you cannot have a senate majority with one party, yet the president be of another. It's why things actually get done there. It's way all nations at the top of the food-chain use this system. When your party loses, it means you lose and no longer get to call the shots. When your party wins office, then you get to call the shots. Something that seems to be common sense in most other developed countries.

Your opinion of our system might (or might not) be interesting but I found it odd, earlier you responded to

me as though we in the USA are under "your system".

I'm glad you got that straight now. B)

And all the perfunctory remarks about "developed countries" and all that.

My friend we might indeed be crumbling over here but "we" were still the "Super Power" while you in AU

are a long way off from ever even "sharing" that title.

Now if you pay your taxes... you are welcome to stay.... if not... scaddadle.

Excellent, more power to the voters - who lost in the last election. Really, they have no clue how the electoral process works. Not that you can't do whatever the hell you like but all this nonsense actually detracts from the political system that is in place - of course, that's what these people want, an end to the democratic process and the beginning of a dictatorship of the right. Bravo!

You think that mailing your congressman is undemocratic.

I mailed.. a democrat..and told him to lighten up and be more socialistic...

Danno like every other Republican, you opinions are getting more ridiculous by the day. Superpower? Dude the majority of you are dirt poor. Sorry chief but that is the reality. Why don't you go find me the ghettos or the trailer parks or the dilapidated infrastructure in a country of 21 million; yet almost the same physical size of the US. It's freagin embarrassing the state America is in yet we have large groups of people like yourself who are continuing to keep the country down with your delusional views. We pump $750 billion annually into the army, while the country literally falls apart and America continues to become the laughing stock of the developed world. Which of course does not include the nearly $1 trillion spent so far on the two wars, one of which you are losing. The uneducated morons in the country need to stick to their love of extracurricular activities (including sport) and leave running the country to those with a bachelors minimum.

All you have is silly innuendos. Same with health care, you guys have nothing solid apart from bullshit to go on.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Here's the math for this "widespread grassroots campaign":

There are 535 Congresspeople.

1,000,000 pink slips have been sent:

1,000,000 / 535 = 1,869 people.

1,869 people have sent pink slips.

The goal of the pink slip campaign is to send 5,000,000 pink slips:

5,000,000 / 535 = 9,345 people.

9,345 people sending pink slips is the goal of this "widespread grassroots campaign."

I will leave the rest to the reader.

Superpower?

A 14 trillion dollar economy, dude. No-one comes even close.

Say what you like, this country has tremendous wealth and economic power.

What the country pumps dollar wise means nothing.

It's what's in the pockets of the average Joe that counts. The average Joe doesn't have squat. The average Joe is living in a crumbling country. Just look at NYC, a financial powerhouse yet the city is dog ugly. I have seen cities in 2nd world countries that are actually more modern and well maintained than NYC. Which says something considering that NYC is also the better of list of cities.

5,000,000. That's about 7% of the electorate that voted in the last midterm election. I think you can be pretty sure that most people who go through the trouble of mailing their congressman vote. Elections are very often decided by less than a 7% margin.

Of course, no one can say how many of the people sending pink slips are typically swing voters (probably not many of them, admittedly). I don't know why 5,000,000 voters expressing an opinion is laughable though.

A referendum by approx 2.5% of the American people is not exactly a groundswell, more a pimple on the political butt - to say nothing of what the other 97.5% of the voters would put in their pink slips were they to believe in plebiscite politics. Stupid? I think we all know it is ;)

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

America does not need a Bin Laden when it has Danno and Co's. Only morons continue to pump money into the military and fatten the rich, all while the country falls apart. GW would be rolling in his grave. When the leaders of the G20 saw the state of Pittsburgh, they probably went home and laughed; including China.

The Crumbling of America

America's infrastructure is collapsing. Tens of thousands of bridges are structurally deficient or functionally obsolete. A third of the nation's highways are in poor or mediocre shape. Massively leaking water and sewage systems are creating health hazards and contaminating rivers and streams. Weakened and under-maintained levees and dams tower over communities and schools. And the power grid is increasingly maxed out, disrupting millions of lives and putting entire cities in the dark. The Crumbling of America explores these problems using expert interviews, on location shooting and computer generated animation to illustrate the kinds of infrastructure disasters that could be just around the bend.
