Can just visualize his four brides fighting each other to see which one has to have sex with him first.

That wouldn't happen. He'd go from woman to woman and hear each of them say, "Not tonight Hon, I have a headache." Then come market day all 4 of his credit cards would go missing.

If a man decided to swim outside everyday in January, in Chicago that would be crazy...in Miami that would be normal. Perspective!

I wouldn't condone this in the US because we have laws AND traditions that forbid it. Personally, I'm very happy with a monogamous marriage. But they're in South Africa. They're Zulu. It's part of their tradition. Nobody's forcing the women to marry him, and apparently he can afford to have 4 wives. Let's put this in contrast with Americans who frequently get married and cheat on their wives...steal money from their families to spend with their mistresses...steal time from their families to spend with their mistresses...and lie to friends, family, business associates and themselves about their relationships. Sometimes the modern way is not always the more civilized way.

I'm all for accepting other people's cultural practices that I could never live with myself, but I see this as harmful to society. Perhaps less harmful than producing offspring in secret affairs, but still harmful.

The man is not doing anything wrong according to his culture, and if the women are okay with it, I can see how it might work in their family unit. I don't judge them personally, but I think it is a practice that needs to be rethought in a modern age. For one thing, the fact that it is acceptable and even honorable to have more than one wife reduces the value of women and raises the value of men. I wish I could remember the specifics in an article I read in the last year or two about an African queen or princess who was the first wife and was openly expressing her dislike of her culture's practice of polygamy for the reasons stated.

But I think it also creates all sorts of other problems, including inbreeding, more entrenched tribal feelings, etc.

This was the norm in Benin a generation or two ogo, but most educated men and women today are more likely to consider it backwards and shameful.

You bring up some good points, but a couple I can't agree with. For instance the "inbreeding". At least their children will openly know who their siblings are...much better than the children of secret affairs. And what's wrong with tribal feelings if you live in a tribal culture?

The article says it's accepted, but doesn't say it's the norm. I still say it's better to have honest and legal polygamy rather than what happens to a lot of people in the US. I think it's much more respectful to be truthful to ones spouse and saying "I'd like someone else in my life in addition to you" rather than to do it in secret, or be torn between leaving a family where compassion and caring remains but love is lost for a romantic getaway.

This guy had been married to his first wife for 12 years, and re-married her along with the 3 additional wives. According to the article, the wives take each other as friends. Again, it's their culture.

Before I met my wife, I dreamed of having adventures with a million beautiful women. Now I dream of having a million beautiful adventures with my one and only wife.
