Almost everyone thinks we need to reform health care. It's just that a strong plurality think that Obama is trying to do it wrong.

So you think it is more about process than substance? I agree. Obama should not have gone to Congress empty handed, and expected them to do anything worthwhile. He should have listened to his "gut", and rammed Single-Payer Healthcare through when he still had enough "polical capital" to do it. Right now, that tank in on "E" and he will be lucky if he still has a freindly Congress next year, let alone after the next election in 2010.

Most dems are losing in the polls right now (for 2010)

And polls that are this far outside of the election cycle matter how? Wait til the campaigns begin to start quoting polls.

The campaigns did begin. Where have you been?

They haven't started in full force yet. Get a clue, thats 6 months down the line before any warchest spending begins in earnest. Yes, technically you could say that they have begun because a few candidates have spent money on polling and canvasing, but that is meaningless.

I disagree. The Democrats have the votes to pass a bill. Obama was showing bipartisanship in being open to any viable solutions. The Republicans have come up empty...not Obama. Now it's time to fulfill his campaign pledge of reforming health care, in spite of the Republicans.

Well, yes, you are right, there are enough Democrats to pass anything they darn well want. But why hasn't anything passed yet? Claims that Obama is trying to drum up bipartisan support are simply drinking the Koolaid. The reality is that there is no plan that has broad enough Democratic support. Put another way, there are enough Democratic congressman who are actually reading the polls and listening to their constituents that realize that people don't want government health care.

Claims that Obama is trying to drum up bipartisan support are simply drinking the Koolaid.

Obama approached this whole health care reform with an openness to all viable solutions...specifically calling for Republicans in Congress to help forge a meaningful health care reform bill. With the exception of just a few Republicans, their leaders had said on many occasions that they didn't want to have anything to do with any bill the President or the Democrats in Congress put forward - no compromises whatsoever. This is why Health Care Reform has been taking so long. The Republicans huffed and puffed and demanded that they be included...Obama gave them all the opportunities in the world (see even the lack of Republicans on board with the Gang of 6).

So let's not try to rewrite what has transpired on this. Yes, there are some Democrats that think Obama made a mistake by reaching out across the aisle. I think he did the right thing....because now we can put to rest any hope that Republicans want to work with the President. They're being political hacks...they know that if Obama succeeds in getting a bill passed, it will hurt their chances of regaining control of Congress. Isn't it great to know the Republicans number one agenda is taking back control rather than trying to help fix all the problems they created for this country? And you can see that sentiment echoed here ....they're knashing their teeth as they look ahead for 2010.

Baucus’s Senate panel whacks away at healthcare amendments

Finance Committee cuts 61 amendments, leaving just 503 to go. Among the major issues remaining: a public option.

Of the 61 amendments taken up this week, the panel accepted only four proposed by Republicans. Another 17 GOP amendments were defeated on near party-line votes, and 11 – including four signature GOP proposals to cap jury awards in medical malpractice cases – were dismissed on procedural grounds.

By contrast, Democrats have won 20 of their amendments and lost one, but that one loss was huge.

In a rare move, the chairman and two other Democrats sided with Republicans to defeat an amendment by Sen. Bill Nelson (D) of Florida that would have required drug companies to provide rebates to seniors to close a controversial coverage gap in the 2003 Medicare Prescription Drug bill, dubbed the “donut hole.” Those rebates would save taxpayers $86 billion over 10 years, Nelson had said.

You conveniently left out these parts of that article...

"At first glance, it’s a fiercely partisan process. With a 13 to 10 edge on the panel, Democrats are rolling over most Republican amendments."

...

But the Nelson amendment would also have unraveled a deal between President Obama and the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) that commits drug companies to $80 billion in cost cuts — but no more. The amendment failed by a vote of 10-13 on Thursday, with Sens. Baucus, Thomas Carper of Delaware and Robert Menendez of New Jersey breaking ranks to vote with Republicans."

Is there a point to your post? How does that show the Republicans are not participating in the process?

You're angry at Obama for working with the Republicans.
