(CNN) -- Iran tested a missile-launching system and several types of short- and medium-range missiles Sunday, the state-run Press TV said.

Earlier, the country's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps had said it would stage missile exercises beginning Sunday to promote the armed forces' defense capabilities.

The tests, which are expected to last until Monday, are code-named "Payghambar-e Azam 4" or "The Great Prophet 4," Press TV said.

The missiles, fired at targets around the country Sunday, included the Fateh-110, a short-range ground-to-ground missile, and Tondar-69, a short-range naval missile, the station said. Several models of medium-range Shahab missiles were tested at night, Press TV reported. video.gifWatch Iranian missile tests »

The final stage of the tests will be held Monday morning, when Iran plans to test the long-range Shahab missile, the station said.

In May, Iran said it tested a surface-to-surface missile that is capable of reaching parts of Europe.

At the time, a White House official said actions in Iran were noteworthy.

"Of course, this is just a test, and obviously there is much work to be done before it can be built and deployed. But I see it as a significant step forward in terms of Iran's capacity to deliver weapons," said Gary Samore, special assistant to the president on nonproliferation.

The latest test follows Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's disclosure Friday that Iran was building a second uranium enrichment facility.

The United States and Israel believe that Iran is seeking nuclear weapons under the guise of a civilian nuclear energy program.

Iran has denied the allegation.

Still hear that argument as to why some countries should have the right to have nuclear weapons, but others cannot. Find it very difficult to give a reason why we should have them. Really haven't kept up with this, at one time, we had enough nuclear to completely wipe out the entire world ten times over. The only valid counter I have heard, is that no country should be allowed to have nuclear weapons. Anybody find that disagreeable? We cannot use these weapons without killing ourselves, talk about global warming.

In engineering and in research and development a key and the first question to be answered before spending tons of money, is a knew concept even possible? In the terms of competition, if a competitor can do something, so can we. Nuclear weapons do not fit in this category, the science is already 70 years old. If we can do it, so can anybody else, just takes money.

Having nuclear weapons is no different then you walking down the street with your friend with each of you pointing a gun at each others head. May be a deterrent, but a hell of a way to live.

You seem to think that a wacko like Ahmadinejad should have nukes at his disposal? After repeatedly calling for the annhilation of Israel?

A war in the middle east would shut the shipping lanes . Maybe you use wood to fuel your car and home but not many in the US. have that ability. Where would our economy go if we had to pay say $10-15/gallon for gas heating oil and diesel next week. How about a few nukes get dropped on the largest oil fields in the middle east.

It might go up, but not that much. We get most of our oil from South America and Canada. I think its something like 5% comes from the middle-east. Gas didn't go up that much when Iraq was attacked.

Not a valid argument, because we don't call for the destruction of another country, this requires that other country have trust in us or any country that has this powerful force. Israel has nuclear weapons.

Another crisis exist with anyone that has knowledge in this field, have to be watched like a hawk, especially if they are a couple of months behind in their car payments. Russia can also use a couple of extra bucks, keeping secrets is not easy.

Regarding madman, not so sure about some of our leaders either, just pray if something happens, family and I would be in the vaporization zone, on the outskirts, can be a very long and extremely painful death.

Name one of our leaders who have called for the annhilation of a people? Oppressive regimes should not have nukes because they consistently use their might to intimidate and taunt their neighbors. You are ridiculous to say that you're not so sure about some of our leaders. Some might not have liked Bush, but most didn't compare him to Ahmadinejad, and I certainly don't compare Obama to Ahmadinejad either.

So lets disarm the world (in your opinion) of Nukes. However, it will only be the US that gets rid of its nukes while everyone else on the planet laughs at us and keeps theirs. This is a naive idea.

Clearly the timing of these missile launches is a direct response to the warnings given by Obama and other leaders last week.

Whats interesting is.... everyone from Bush to Hillary to Obama has stated IRAN CANNOT BE PERMITTED TO

TO HAVE NUKES.... yet the train keeps right on rolling in that direction.

Once other like-minded countries see Iran has them.. it will be a foot race to each one have their own.

If we seriously want to stop this, it will take a dramatic response.

Thing is, I'm not sure any of these other leading countries who were huffing and puffing last week about it.... would do anything more than a blockade or talk.

I don't think Obama would either.

Did not ever suggest we get rid of our nuclear weapons, just the fact that some nations have them others do not, and their logic, accept it or not, is that if some should have them, so should they. Your statements show arrogance that other countries despised. Certainly not conducive to obtaining peace in this world. Been born with a nuclear weapon constantly pointed at my head, don't think about it everyday, but is just another threat. Even very possible some nations have nuclear weapons in space. In contrast, it's a very expensive insurance policy with resources that could be used for other humanitarian needs.

Yes, it would be a much better world without nuclear weapons, just the cost of a couple nuclear subs could send all of our kids to college. Maybe even a couple of bucks left over for healthcare.
