If I remember correctly, the medical at Knightsbridge asks you to read the letters one line up from the bottom of a standard eye chart.

If you want to put your mind at ease you could get a cheap eyetest at Secsavers for about 18 pounds.

While I was sitting at her desk answering questions she told me to read the eye chart. It was half way across the room and was up on the wall at an angle from where I was sitting. She didn't say to cover one eye or to read a certain line. She just said read it. I have good eyesight and read it all down to the last line which I couldn't quite make out. She was writing when I was reading the letters and I doubt she was listening. I could have been saying anything. Having good eyesight isn't a requirement of getting a visa. Don't worry about it. They just go through the motions to try and convince you they are earning the £190! All the US government cares about is the blood test and the chest x-ray. The rest is a waste of time.

Yeah our own free NHS doctors could do just as bad a job as the expensive private ones!

Also wanted to add that my daughter has poor eyesight and had trouble reading the letters WITH her glasses. The doctor made some disapproving noises and said nothing else. It wasn't a problem.

ETA: The doctor was initially a misery in the beginning then gradually got a little (LITTLE) nicer as we went on. Small talk is NOT her forte.........
