I just did some searching on the topic of eyesight. I didn't know they tested your eyes until a few days ago.

How important is eyesight as a part of the test?

With both eyes open, i can see fine, but i have keratoconus in one eye, which makes it kinda blury when i look through just my left eye. My right eye is fine.

If i struggle to read the smaller letters with my left eye, are they going to fail me at my medical, and there for deny me? Any tips on what I should do?

I'm kinda worried about this as i read that someone was borderline fail just for needing a new prescription...

They did not test my eyes, did not know they did now.

Can not thinl of any communicable disease associated with eyes.

People even this summber have been saying they had theirs tested.

Supposedly:

"Just as simple as covering one eye and reading the bottom line of the chart first forwards with one eye covered and then backwards with the other eye covered."

Which for my left eye, wont be simple....

If you've got any condition that you think might need further explanation, then take something from your personal doctor or eye doctor explaining what it is, if it's treated, medicated, etc and that it doesn't impair your ability to see with both eyes.

Does anyone know what their minimum requirements are in order to pass the test? Also what distance they make you stand at?

They do test your eyes.

I asked if I could put my glasses on and then had to read one of the lines near the bottom of the chart with my hand over one eye. And then with the other. No reading it backwards or anything.

I can't say how far the distance is exactly as she just said "stand over there" with a point. Maybe 12ft? I dunno. Honestly, I didn't pay much attention. But I'm sure Nich's advice is the best thing to do, visit your optician before just to get some confirmation that you can see OK on a functional basis.

I had my medical two weeks ago. Same as Gemmie, I was just asked to stand "over there" and read a line that was marked with an arrow off the board, first with one eye covered and then the other. I have pretty bad eyesight (-8 and -6) and was not asked to remove my glasses.

The problem is, mine isnt correctable with glasses. If I wait 18 months i might actually be able to get on a waiting list for an operation with the NHS. But thats probably going to take like 3 years in total, which I dont have. I can see PERFECTLY with my right eye, and both eyes open. But my left eye is pretty blury.

How small were the letters on it? I really hope I don't end up failing now over something like this :(.

thanks

I think you'll be fine. They exclude people with sexually transmitted diseases, active tuberculosis, HIV, malaria, leprosy... but probably not poor eyesight.

I'm still going to try and get a letter from a good optician before i go, and explain that i had my eyes tested so many months ago, and then again recently, and it hasn't got any worse, and that i can see fine with both eyes open. Ill probably only show it to them if they ask also.

Sound like a good plan?

Unless you have a communicable eye infection, don't sweat it.

Thanks for the reply pushbrk. I believe Haley sent you a PM, so thanks for taking a look. Hopefully this will be the case. I would be slightly annoyed if they did deny me over vision. Ill still get a letter to be on the safe side, but I wont show it, unless they decide its a fail or something.

This seems like the most logical thing which is why at first it seems harmless, but the fact someone else had to renew a prescription before the interview was what seemed a little scary.

Anyway, everyone I tell about this thinks it would be completely ridiculous to deny him on the fact he has poor vision in one eye.
