i agree with you to an extent.. yes, there is opportunity in the US, given you have the work ethic. but how often does it happen? what percent of all the poor in the US actually move up a class in their lifetime?? yeah, we know Oprah's story, and see NBA players, or actors do it.. but i personally think it's rare.. if born poor, you will most likely die poor... i am assuming that you're implying the philippines lack a similar 'chance' or opportunity

I didn't mean to imply anything, I was simply commenting about America in that one.

I would agree that going from poor to rich is uncommon but going from poor to middle class isn't uncommon in America.

not to sidetrack, but i wanted to also mention that i believe that work ethic does not hold the same value to the average person here compared to the PI.

I can't comment on that as my personal experiences in the PH is limited

lastly, punctuality. being on time for things just doesn't mean as much in the philippines as it does here. some of you may have already noticed this from your own experiences, and to my fellow pinays reading this, you know what i am talking about. ;p.. my 2cents.

Okay, I did notice that when I was there. The wife told me that we would go to the Municipal Hall at 8am the next morning. I was up at 6 ready by 7 and she slept. At 9ish she rolled out of bed and we actually made it there around 11am. She said we're okay as long as we get there before lunch!

It will be interesting to see how well she adjusted to the expected punctuality here.

Perhaps you would love their government also? There is a reason people want want to leave the Philippines so bad. It is a great place if you have money. For the masses it is a horrible place to live

Horrible? Do you have facts on this one? I would say this s absolutely wrong. What bad about the government of the Philippines is the corruption. But can you tell me where else in this world has a government without corruption?...

Professional tends to work abroad to reach their dreams like filipino engineers working in a middle east, for one thing they saw better opportunities or better paying jobs..

There are yes Filipino's migrated to other countries but they keep on going back for a vacation because they miss the Philippines so much..

Philippines is not a horrible place to live,i love Philippines and will always come back..It will always be my home!!!

No matter what! Philippines is a beautiful place...

Do not disagree. I loved my time there. Would not want to live there with no pesos sadly.... That in the end was the point. A weak central government filled with corruption. It is not a great place to be with no money. Which from my experience most Filipinos do not have.

hmmm.. it cant be that great to live in the US without money either.. if i had limited resources, i would definitely want to be in the PI, as the dollar goes much further there.... hell, savings accounts even pay more there.. 'back in the day,' about 16 yrs ago, you could get a tcd that paid of 10%.... i'm only 29, but i know where i will be spending my retirement!

I am tired of this subject. It saddens me that people in a rich country has such issues helping poor people. Whatever though. Maybe you all are right. There is a huge difference between the USA and the Philippines. In the USA it is all about their self. Letting their mother be homeless. Not having any natural affection for the less fortunate. Not once met a selfish Filipino. America is the epitome of selfishness...... edit for /sarcasm

Everything comes down to stereotypes that help you sleep at night. All Americans are fat and lazy. All Pinoys are thin and caring. If you are marrying someone from another country because of any prejudices you may have. What is your life going to be like when you finally realize that he or she is human just like you. In the end we all suffer from the human condition. No race is more evil lazy name whatever. WE ARE ALL THE SAME!

Pretty positive the point is that people are people. There are good, and bad. The simple fact you want to become like a developing nation shows your ignorance. I am sorry have to say that, but it is just the way it is.

Just because you see the pleasant side of the Philippines does not mean there is not an underside to it. You are seeing what you want to see. Yeah the mayor is pleasant to you. You are bringing money to his town. He would love to have many more just like you. Of course he is not going to have someone gunned down in front of you. It does happen though.

I am a little amazed that anyone can go to a developing nation, and go wow I want to live just like that. With your background then most likely at best you are middle class in the USA. There is no middle class there to speak of. You have a two class system. Top 15% and dirt poor. The Philippines is a wonderful place if you have money, and are foreign. The fact you could not tell that you were being treated different, and was only seeing the good side speaks volumes about you.

I never said that I don't believe there is a downside to the PH situation. I do understand that it is either all or nothing in the PH. I never said I want to live just like that.

I simply said that the US government with all of it's entitlement programs is going overboard and it's retarded that so many here think the government owes them a good life just because they were born here.

Socialized Healthcare is stupid...

Socialized Welfare is stupid...

Socialized Parenting is stupid...

Social Security as a retirement supplement is okay, as your only Retirement Plans it's stupid.

The Government should do as little as possible in our daily lives. Do I believe that if someone is too lazy to try to support them self they deserve to starve? Hell Yes!

I've worked some pretty crappy jobs in my life to support my family and I'd do it all again if I had to. I owe my success to me, didn't sit around on my backside waiting for hand-outs.

When my grandmother was sick her family took care of her, not the government. She worked well into her sixties and earned the meager Social Security she received.

These are my opinions based on my life experience.

I hear all the time about how corrupt the PH Government is, meh... I live in Illinois, remember a New York Politician came here to become a Chicago Democratic {no corruption in the Chicago Democratic Machine} State Senator and move past go directly into the White House! Yeah I'm so proud of the Not Corrupt Illinois Government, where being governor gives you an 80% chance of conviction!

Overlooking the Bovine Excrement that lies not only under but all around our fine example of how to govern a nation is ignorant.

Putting words in my mouth I didn't say and then passing judgement on me based on them is ignorance at its best.

Right Wing Nut Alert!

Are you just trying trolling looking to stir things up?

Intelligent conversation can be had without resorting to personal insults & attacks.

You seem to take things way out of context intentionally.

Re: my mother being homeless, you do understand that there are some people who simply choose to live that way don't you? I tried several times to put a roof over my mother's head bringing her into my own home and each time it ended the same way. Once she started getting to what we would consider stable (been working a job for a few months, had some money, etc) she would just disappear. You can't force someone to live a life they don't want. After she died, my brother and I even tried to help her husband of 3 years (whom we barely knew) with the exact same results.

I do believe in helping those less fortunate than ourselves. I recognize the difference between a hand-out and a hand-up. If the social welfare programs rewarded efforts to become self-sufficent then they would be more effective.

If you have not once met a selfish Filipino then I should introduce you to Ate Mila:

For several months we paid her to help Mom around the house. Mom & my wife would always feed her, her son & a couple of her grandkids. She was allowed to wash their clothes at the house using our water & soap, always given left-overs from lunch (actually often times extra was cooked for just this purpose) to ensure they had enough for dinner. WHen I sent Toys for our son I included toys for her granddaughter who was allowed to accompany her, the list goes on. Basically they were treated like members of the family.

How did she show her appreciation for this? By stealing from my wife & son! She stole chocolates from the fridge. She stole clothes from the laundry line. She stole toys from our son (who's only 2 years old).

Currently Mom is letting a family live in the extra room of the house in return for some assistance around the house. The mother also works for one of Mom's sisters preparing food. Again my wife's things have started to disappear.

Does this mean that all Filipinos can't be trusted? I don't think so. There is good and bad everywhere.

Right Wing Nut Alert!

Huh? Col BG, as I've stated before I'm neither Republican or Democrat. I simply don't believe the Government, Federal or State, should provide everything. Provide a safety net maybe but only if it's done properly.

No system is perfect of course but that's neither here nor there. The only reason the Government programs came into the discussion is because my opinion is that Filipinos (in general) have to be more resilient than your average American as a result of this difference.

Do I have my doubts about Obama? Sure I do. Honestly I've had my doubts about every President since I became aware of the whole political scene. I believe it is our duty as citizens to not blindly trust the Government and question everything.

Everything comes down to stereotypes that help you sleep at night. All Americans are fat and lazy. All Pinoys are thin and caring.:rofl::rofl: i really think you should retract that statement, and take your own advise --> realize that you were being treated differently because you are a foreigner!

Wow just wow. People that use natural tragedies to further their political views are a bunch of ignorant followers. There are videos of Filipinos floating around youtube laughing at someone stuck on the top of a car during the storm. That does not mean every Filipino is is cold and jaded though.

You want a generalization that is true? The ones of you spouting this nonsense listen to Rush Limbaugh, and or Glenn Beck. I truly feel for your wives. If the stereotypes about their listeners are true. You guys are a bunch of racist hate mongers. Bob hate to break this to you, but your inability to finish the simplest most rudimentary form of education does speak volumes about you. It shows you have no foresight in your life. You have cheated yourself and family of a better life, and future.

This entire debate is saddening and sickening. There is another storm due to hit at the end of this week, and some of you believe spouting political nonsense like a parrot is more important. You guys are sickening. You are a disgrace for the good people in the USA, and the Philippines.

yet you continue to 'spout' off your own nonsense... think it's about time to put a lid on it..

A lot of these Kanos went searching for Filipina wives because they bought into stereotypes....yet they get extremely uncomfortable with the stereotype of the fat, middle-aged Kano with ultra conservative views who marry petite Filipina with boyish figures. What comes around, goes around.

One of the reasons I would like to move to the philippines one day with my wife is the attitude of the poor filipinos and how they deal with circumstances. Look at these two photos and see how big the differences are.

In philippines 24 hours after the flood, a woman is already starting to clean up her home.

capt.a7da9505ba134ed7889fd592784ccde1.aptopix_philippines_flooding_xpr120.jpg

In the united states after hurricane katrina...about 24 hours after the flood (you can see the waters have still not subsided) people are looting like crazy.

Looters2.jpg

I read a post on here of someone saying that louisiana is still recovering from the flood. I would bet anything that within a few months people in the philippines will already have recovered from their flood.

This is also what scares me about my country (the US) That when bad things happen here, we take forever to bounce back from it. With what is happening with the economy today I think its going to get so much worse in the US over the next year or so and I just dont think the people here can handle it and things will get so much worse than the great depression.

Perhaps the reason the filipinos recover so fast is that they all pray when disaster happens and God helps them recover quickly. In the US, many people do not believe in God anymore and do not pray when bad things happen which is why i believe we take so long to recover from disasters.

Well this has certainly been an interesting topic to read. From Politics to Education it's been absolutely fascinating. I just wanted to point out one thing to the OP. Did it ever occur to you, that what you see in the second picture is not indicative of the American population? I happen to know, that there is in fact looting taking place in parts of Manila, and other affected areas. There is looting taking place in Samoa, and other parts of Indonesia that were affected by the Tsunamis and Earthquakes. There are also proud people, trying desperately to save their property, and establish some semblance of normalcy. There are people dedicating their time, energy and resources on helping others. This happened During Katrina as well. Posting a couple of pictures, and using them to describe the mindsets of two totally different populations is very short sited and inaccurate. Perhaps the people in the second photo, are in fact the proprietors of that particular store, and they are trying to save what's left of their merchandise? Or maybe you think Blacks couldn't possibly have a clothing store that sells name brand merchandise like Nike? Of course we all know better. Those kids are looting the hell out of that store! Fo' Shizzle!

Behavior? It's called sarcasm. The OP was a simpleton's treatise on the differences between the behavior of the poor in the U.S. vs. the poor in the Philippines using photos to prove their point. For you to overlook that, I think they call that being selective in Psychiatry, but do correct me if I'm wrong, doc.

My bad sonny! Not everyone can pretend to be someone special on the net. Seriously guy..... Want to see how easy BS is. I am a multi millionaire. My daddy can beat up your daddy. Oh and that pic is from the future!!!!! Does not change the fact you are a racist and the subtle art of sarcasm escapes you. I appreciate there is a difference between the different shrink fields. Just do not care what the differences are. Unlike some have never once claimed to be anything other than a normal person. No md or genius architect. Just a normal person. Wow amazing huh!

Last time checked right wing nut jobs were the ones forcing ####### down everyones throats. It is you wackos such as you that do this racist #######. Then when someone says something then get all holier than thou. You want some real stereotypes. It is people like you that show up to meetings with guns if the president is around. Will not even go into the death threats. There are some stereotypes for you. It is sickening how racist the right wingers have become.

 Don't let some of these extreme views discourage you. A lot of these Kanos went searching for Filipina wives because they bought into stereotypes....yet they get extremely uncomfortable with the stereotype of the fat, middle-aged Kano with ultra conservative views who marry petite Filipina with boyish figures. What comes around, goes around.

I feel bad for their wives. Could not imagine leaving my country to end up in the home of a racist. Then again some of those guys are getting played now. So yeah what goes around comes around.

in psychiatry, the behavior you both are exhibiting is called Projection.. sad, just sad.. :ot2:

Woot!!!!! A psychology lesson for free from someone that has issues with paragraphs and capitalization! It has to be spot on!!!! I love you guys!!! I feel so privileged to be around you chunky middle aged guys all with an IQ of 170 and your GEDS! Only a normal person here. Did the high school and college thing. What a loser am I?!

 despite the fact that you look old enough to be my grandfather, i am far more educated than you, as you have clearly made such a fool of yourself... GED  while i was beginning med school, you at the same age, were probably on your first marriage, pushing 2 jobs, crapping out multiple kids, and developing that miserable self-loathing complex you call the "human condition." and now years later, you've started anew, found an oblivious pinay that will swallow your BS, all the while playing Candyland with your grandkids, and you think you have the right to force your opinions onto others?? looking at your picture reminds me of the stereotypes you and your sidekick speak of. you should really take it down, Lolo, before firing 'old' comments to others.. btw, there's a marked difference between psychology and psychiatry... i use to think that wisdom came with age, but you have proved me all wrong... that is, older people can be ignorant and throw hissy-fits just like children too! CHEERS!

LOL this is really funny now. Nyok.. Nyok.. :jest:

Chains do not hold a marriage together. It is threads, hundreds of tiny threads which sew people together through the years.
