Well I didn't get the job I wanted, so it looks like I will have to get a sponsor. Does anyone have experience with this process? I know I have to fill out the I-864 for myself, but what form does my sponsor(s) fill out? My mother and step-father will be sponsoring me.. Any help in this would greatly be appreciated!!

Thanks in advance

Chance

If they do not live with you, have one of them fill out the 864 (the one who has the highest income) and the spouse fill out the 864A, include pay-stubs, tax return and proof of LPR or citizenship (copy of passport, BC, etc..)

the spouse still has to fill out the 864A even though they don't live in the same household?

Yes, the spouse of the co-sponsor needs to complete the 864A (to accompany the 864 filled out by the co-sponsor)... I think that they do this to be sure that the spouse of your co-sponsor is aware that they have made a financial committment since their finances are co-mingled and technically both of them are on the hook for the sponsorship...

Welcome to my world And Sam! We've been left out of the party apparently.

Our timeline:

2/88: We met in Sydney, Australia at a youth hostel! He's Finnish, I'm American-both were in our early 20s at the time and fresh out of college (so couldn't afford to visit each other's countries after that!). We had a three-day romance, then went our separate ways. He actually was going to Sydney a week later, but decided at the last minute to cut his trip short in another country and go early. Wow.

1988-1998: Wrote "snail mail" letters/sent Xmas cards, but lived our separate lives. I married someone else, divorced in 2006...he lived with someone for years and then that ended.

10/08: Because of a series of random life events, I Googled my Finn Man and found him (but no link to his email, and the website his name was on was in Estonian so I couldn't even read it!). It took me two weeks to find a link to someone else, who forwarded my email to him (we were both single at the time thankfully!!!!). The email went to his spam folder but he happened to check it that day and responded back to me immediately! This was after 10 years of no contact and almost 21 years of not seeing each other after we first met.

11/08-5/09: We traveled back and forth to visit each other. Love at first (second?) sight!

7/09: Married in Helsinki, Finland...after meeting randomly 21 1/2 years ago and finding each other again!!!!!

8/13/09: I-130 sent!!!!!!!!!

Rest is on my timeline!

You fill out the 864... Your co-sponsor fills out an 864 and if your co-sponsor is married, then the spouse of them have to fill out the 864A, this acknowledges that they understand their spouse has financially obligated them....

Durdin, you as the petitioner will have to file I864 regardless of income.

Your parents (whoever is the higher income) will file a I864A. I'm not sure about your other parent.

Not entirely correct... If the parents do not live with the petitioner, then they file and 864 as well as the petitioner will fill out the 864... If the co-sponsor is married, then the spouse needs to file an 864A which accompanies the 864 filled out by the co sponsor... But correct that the US petitioner NEEDs to fill out an 864 regardless of income...

Thanks for correcting me, Christeen. Sorry, I must have missed the part where she said her parents live separately.

Right, an I864 if the joint sponsor lives apart from the petitioner. And I864A if the joint sponsor is in the same household.

But you as the petitioner will need to file 9864.

So, in this case, Durdin you file the I864. Your mother/stepfather files another I864 and your stepfather/mother will file the I864A.

Hope this clears up your confusion!
