Canadian Consulate General, Atlanta

September 25, 2009

This message provides Canadians with information regarding human cases of the 2009 H1N1 Flu Virus. The flu virus has currently spread to 198 countries in the world, and continues to spread. While in many cases the effects are relatively mild, it is still to be taken seriously. As of September 22, 2009 about 394,000 confirmed cases and 4,300 deaths have been recorded globally. Reliable statistics are no longer being maintained, due to the widespread nature of the virus. The total number of cases and deaths is probably far higher than official reports.

The Consulate General encourages all Canadians to be vigilant with regards to their personal hygiene and sanitation practices. You should wash your hands frequently and thoroughly with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds to eradicate viruses and bacteria. When soap and water are not available, apply a hand sanitizer with a minimum of 60 percent alcohol content. Remember to practice good respiratory etiquette by coughing and sneezing into your sleeve or a tissue and get vaccinated against flu, as recommended by your health care provider. Also, ask your employer, organization or school about pandemic contingency plans, and make a pandemic contingency plan for your family.

Any questions or concerns about influenza or other illnesses should be directed to a medical professional.

At this time, the Consulate General advises Canadians to review the guidance provided by the Public Health Agency of Canada (www.fightflu.ca) and the World Health Organization (www.who.org). Canadians planning on travelling outside their country of current residence should determine if any form of entry screening is in effect in the destination country. You should not travel if you are displaying flu-like symptoms. Consult our travel reports and warnings page at http://www.voyage.gc.ca/countries_pays/menu-eng.asp

Canadian citizens or their families should inform the Consulate General if they have been detained or quarantined by local authorities. Canadian citizens should be aware that if they have been detained or quarantined in accordance with local public health regulations, the Consulate General is limited in its ability to intervene.

Canadians living or traveling abroad are encouraged to register with the nearest Canadian Embassy or Consulate through the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade website (www.voyage.gc.ca). Canadians without Internet access may register directly with the nearest Canadian Embassy or Consulate. By registering, Canadian citizens make it easier for the Embassy or Consulate to contact them in the event of an emergency.

The Canadian Consulate General is located at 1175 Peachtree Street N.E., 100 Colony Square, Suite 1700, Atlanta, Georgia. The direct phone number for consular services is 404-532-2000 and our fax number is 404-532-2050.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

Thanks for caring and posting this Kathryn.

I for one am not buying into this mass hysteria (hysterical not to be confused with the word hilarious) in our Western world about this particular flu strain.

Friends in Mexico, near where it all supposedly started, had not hear a thing about it.

More people die of other types of flu and of pneumonia and car crashes and smoking and drinking and medication mixing and and and...

And so, every one, please choose carefully what media you pay attention too.

Eve the government stands to make money by inoculating every single person.

I have never had a flu shpt and I am not starting now.

If death comes, so be it.

I'm certain it will not be from the flu.

flu kills 1000's of people each yr in the USA and many more around the world! many times people say they have had the flu, in reality they have not, the flu really kicks one in their butt, lol At my hospital, we had a short talk with infection control, and they said they really have no clue on how it is going to affect the population, could be just another normal flu season, or it could be much worse! Sticking ones head into the sand is not a very good way of dealing with it! The H1N1 is a tad different flu virus as it seems to attack the younger crowd, vice the elderly!! wash, wash and wash your hands, cough into ur elbow, stay away at least 3 to 6ft from others that are coughing and wash ur hands. Did I mention wash ur hands? lol

http://www.cdc.gov/flu/weekly/

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Good morning be carefull with the vaccination...my English is not good enough to translate the article I read on La Presse but they made studies in Canada and they cancel the vaccination for the regular flu for now because they found out that people who will have the vaccin get more change to get the H1N1 flu...but a high level of hygiene is always very important!!!!!!!
