the visa is on the way...now what?

So, now that Mark's visa is being printed and couriered back to him (we should have it in hand on Monday...whew!), what should he expect when he gets the package? There's an envelope he's not supposed to open, right? Is his passport separate from that, so that he can board the plane? What will he go through on this end, once he lands in Boston?

Our Timeline

11/2001 - met online

6/2006 - first face-to-face meeting (he's been over 7 times total since then).

1/26/09 - filed I-129F with VSC

1/27/09 - package rec'd, NOA1 sent

1/30/09 - NOA1 hardcopy rec'd

1/31/09 - touched

4/29/09 - NOA2 email rec'd from CRIS! YIPPEE!!

5/12/09 - Mark rec'd Packet 3

5/29/09 - returned packet 3

7/12/09 - resubmitted packet 3 after being told for weeks that it was never rec'd

8/19/09 - interview scheduled for 9/11/09! Medical moved to 9/10/09.

9/10/09 - medical - passed

9/11/09 - interview - approved pending embassy receipt of medical results!!!!!!! Hard to believe it's finally done!!

10/2/09 - POE: Logan Airport in Boston, MA. Absolutely no problems, aside from the customs official not knowing what to do with the visa and having to find someone to help.

10/10/09 - Married!! :D :D :D

12/2/09 - SSN applied for in Montpelier, VT

12/7/09 - SSN received in the mail - that was fast!

1/9/2010 - AOS & EAD package sent

1/15/2010 - NOA's received for both AOS and EAD applications

1/22/2010 - biometrics appointment letter rec'd - appt is for 2/2 in St. Albans, VT.

I believe the envelope to NOT OPEN (!!) is clearly marked, so open as much as you need to get to the passport, which is NOT in the DO NOT OPEN envelope.

K-1:

January 28, 2009: NOA1

June 4, 2009: Interview - APPROVED!!!

October 11, 2009: Wedding

AOS:

December 23, 2009: NOA1!

January 22, 2010: Bogus RFE corrected through congressional inquiry "EAD waiting on biometrics only" Read about it here.

March 15, 2010: AOS interview - RFE for I-693 vaccination supplement - CS signed part 6!

March 27, 2010: Green Card recieved

ROC:

March 1, 2012: Mailed ROC package

March 7, 2012: Tracking says "notice left"...after a phone call to post office.

Once he lands on the US soil, he needs to go to the citizen/returning resident line at the US immigration.

Then hand his passport and the do-not-open envelope to a CBP officer.

He will get his finger prints and facial picture taken and the officer will process papers in the envelope.

SMS will deliver the passport and the big brown envelope in a plastic envelope you know the type couriers use. Inside it will be the passport the brown envelope and a note from the embassy saying something about how long you have to use the visa etc.

Congratulations! I got approved in London today and am so looking forward to getting off the aircraft and walking through Logan with the envelope too!

Congratulations guys. :)

I went through Boston Logan also (if you want to meet up when you're all settled, please let me know. I would love to have a fellow Brit around here adjusting to things).

I got in the Visitor line (as the other one clearly states US citizens and green card holders). I was seen to within a couple of minutes and the officer opened my envelope and put the information from my file into his computer. He didn't seem to have too much knowledge of the K1 visa and had to look up the instructions - he also recorded me as a F1 visa holder which caused complications later on. For this reason, I would recommend using the Resident line just because I assume they know more about the procedure rather than being used to dealing with tourists. They're very friendly and everything is very relaxed. I've never read a poor review of POE at Logan.
