For my brother John. Not at ALL, he would laugh at my mom. It didn't phase him one bit.

That's true here as well, I always responded to being beaten by doing more of whatever behavior "they" were trying to get me not to do.

But I turned out pretty damn stupid so hey.

Luck of the draw I guess...

Well, we were never "beaten". It always happened several hours after the deed was comitted. Part of the punishment was "waiting" for it.

We had general caning at school. You got caned and you had to say thank you. If you didn't, you got it again until you did. This was once a year till the 5th or 6th grade. I usually had to get it three times before I'd mumble out a thank you.

I am not wrong. It is perfectly possible to discipline a child with strategies that work, and work long term. Spanking does not work - you knew what you were doing was wrong so changed the behaviour, not because being spanked 'embarrassed' you. What a crock of ###### - but then you enjoy your little 'I was spanked and look at me now' badge.

I definitely didn't believe in that either. I went to a private school once when i was younger where the teacher would walk around with a yard-stick during nap-time (for those who weren't sleeping). It basically taught us how to pretend (lie) we were sleeping.

A friend of mine who is a Doctor works at the Psychiatric Ward.

He disciplined his daughter without having to inflict bodily harm. She's four by the way, and knows her English Alphabet and Cambodian-Alphabet (not alphabet, but, have no idea what I should name it). The way he corrects his daughter is buy treating her simply as an adult. For example, when the kid wants to play in the sand with worms, he doesn't go and grab her by the arm. He simply says, "Honey, don't go there. It's not a good place. You will get sick." This forces a feedback from the daughter to ask question, "How do I get sick?" He replies with, the worms will go into your tummy and put their eggs in there. Those eggs will release toxins to your body.

She listens and follows his decision of not to go near that sandbox. I thought it was interesting to share. If anyone of you guys see this girl, you wouldn't believe how smart she is compared to someone who is in Kindergarten. Her dad taught her well.

What worms live in sand that can also live in a human gut? He's not that smart, and nor is she ;)

Well I have a high IQ, not genius but certainly better than average. Would it have been over 150 if my Dad didn't spank me? Who is to say. I can say that being spanked did impact my self-esteem in a negative way. It also gave me the view that it was ok for men to hit girls and led me into subsequent abusive relationships in my late teens and then into an emotionally abusive marriage for 16 years before I was able to break to the cycle with therapy. (By the way I in no way blame my parents. They were raised the same way and knew no better...I however do know better and have never/will never beat on my children)

Hmm...Freshwater. There's sand in the box mixed with water. Tape worms, etc...LOL

My nephew who is 5 years old do not know the Cambodian Alphabet by heart, and doesn't ask questions. He just simply listens and follows his mother decision. But, my friend's daughter was amazing. She ask so many questions, science questions too. Very adorable. I'd imagine she'll be valedictorian in her schools when she start going to school.

Sorry, I don't believe spanking leads to domestic abuse.

I can give examples of well-known violent murderers who were not spanked and use that to bolster an arguement too. But I won't.

If you were ABUSED, sure maybe. But measured spanking NO.

Your friend has it right brother. Children are humans, not some sort of pet project. If you both speak the same language, what is the issue,m really? I bet you would not be happy if say, the attendant at the playground thought Johnny was being indeed al ittle ####### and then slapped him, right?? Unless child abuse is the exclusive "right" of parents. #######.

What sister DIARD said is extremely important. We learn what we see. And by working with abused women I can tell you: most of them didn't know any different. Sad and cruel way to ** up your kids life.

That's not how most parasites get into the human food chain - tainted and undercooked meat is the normal route. I know there is one or two water born parasites I don't think there are any that are indigenous to the US. Where is this sandbox?

I am sure she is adorable though, kids that have that natural taste for adventure and curiosity about how the world works always are :)
