What I think this has right is: if you tell a child he/she is an idiot over and over again; accompanied with beating him/her (call it spanking, i call it what it is: beating); he/she will have exactly that view of him/herself. Nothing new here.

Another thing that is rarely discussed though, is parents se'ling kiddos the "you can do ANYTHING you want if you REALLY put your hear in it" BS. Honestly, if you spank your kid once in a blue moon, I don't' think it makes much difference to who you are or who you become but doing so a) means it is a result of frustration and B) doesn't change any behaviour patterns.

Wow. I never got anything like that. My parents were pretty lame compared to the ish we got in school. But bicycle chains, damn. No, the only scar I ever got wasn't a direct result of being hit, rather because I fell and hit something.

You're wrong to say that its always done out of frustration or anger. Obviously if its happeneing 50 times a day there needs to be a change. Measured, and thought out spanking works for some kids. Then there are others that it doesn't. It worked for me. I hated the embarassment so it happened about maybe 10 times in my whole life. Thats when I did something really bad. For me, it worked. For my brother John. Not at ALL, he would laugh at my mom. It didn't phase him one bit. But he's one of the smartest guys on the planet. Could probably build a car from scratch and sheet-metal.
