Calling the NVC

I was reading the short cuts and came upon this:

"You need to call the National Visa Center and plug in your receipt # (from approved I-130) from the service center, if they have your approved petition, they will automatically assign you a case # and then you can e-mail them the Choice of Agent. If they don't have it yet, you're going to have to wait until they do have it."

I have the receipt number and just got the letter today from the USCIS (it has been 10 days since approval), now can anyone guide me on how to exactly reach the menu where " they will automatically assign you a case # " so that I know if it has reached them, or if they've already assigned me a number? The phone menu seems like a walk in the forest.

I tried once and went to the menu where it says "I cannot locate my NVC Case number", not sure if that was right.. anyways any help would be great, thanks!

Wow, 'automatically assign you a case number' - very zippy and - incorrect. The way they worded that (whomever wrote it) makes it sound like the phone system is assigning you a case number.

But whatever!

I don't remember what exactly you have to input in terms of menu choices to find out your NVC case number. If it is unclear from the voice menu why not just get put through to an operator and ask them. :)

The case number does not always work on the automated system. It never worked for us so we always had to speak to an operator.

Very true. The automated system is usually updated at least two weeks after any change. It should be mentioned that the agent (Smith?) sometimes has no information but the automated system does.
