Hi all. I'm in a bit of a pickle here=(

I had my interview on September 14th at the consulate. Everything went well EXCEPT that I didn't have my fiance's original divorce decree. I thought I had the original so when I was gathering my paperwork, I just tucked it away without thinking of it and it wasn't until she was examining my documents, that I discovered it was a photo copy. So they left my status as "pending" and I was told I could return as soon as I got my hands on the original..

My finace (who is deployed) swears up and down he thought he sent me the original copy and has no idea where it could really be. So I contacted the court of the county he was divorced in and they mailed me a "certified copy".

The only catch is that it looks JUST LIKE the photo copy except for a green stamp on the back. I'm concerned this won't fly at the consulate as a "certified" and legal document. I called the court again and they said this is the only type of copy they send out.

So I am due to go back to the consulate on Monday morning but I'm scared to death they are going to turn me away without my visa again. If they do that, I'm a lost cause because this is the closest to the original copy I can get.

Anyone have any thoughts on what I can do? Do you think they will accept them as certified copies?

I am not sure about divorce certificates, but I have seen marriage and birth certificates like this. The clerk offices will make certified copies or a certificate. The stamp you mentioned appears to be a certified copy. You should ask the clerk office to give you a certificate copy which will have the official embossed stamp on the high grade paper which has decorative frame around the edge (state specific). The certificates cost more than the certified copy. With all of that said, a certified copy should still work for you.

So long as it has the official stamp from where the document was issued (ussually in a colour rather than black ink) you should be fine. most divorce papers look like photocopies except for the official mark so i wouldn't worry :)

Good Luck

Selina.

There is only ONE original divorce decree, signed by the judge and entered by the court clerk. The court is NEVER going to give you the original. They will always only give a photocopy of the original. The stamp indicates that the court clerk is certifying that the document is a genuine copy of the original. A certified copy from the court is the best you will ever get, and should be exactly what the consulate is looking for.

For our Embassy, certified copies are perfectly acceptable.
