Other than supply and demand, any idea why plane tickets to VN are so cheap now? Are people not going to VN anymore, are the planes empty? It's strange because there is also a huge price difference between the asian carriers and the american carriers.

off season... and low demand... and price of fuel is lower... fares will be back up in the coming months  it also depends on the airline... I just found a Rt fare from FL in Nov-Dec for under 700 2 years ago the cheapest was 1300

I just went to vn on August 28th 2009 and the price was $750 on EVA air. I think it will be cheaper compare to last year or the year before on any occasions.

It usually cost me around 1000-1300 for RT from Houston all the time but last year it was a whopping 1800 bucks per ticket in July. We "happened" to pick the time to go to VN when fuel price was at its highest :) ... I paid for the total of a little over 8K inclusive of taxes and visas for my wife, my son, mother and I ... I remember when I was at the travel agent's office that day, the lady gave me the total and I gave her my check card then I tuned out for a good few minutes thinking how much fun I could get in VN for 8000 bucks hahaha ... I totally forgot I was in her office. She then snapped me out of my agony and said "Kevin, you must be really hurt, aren't you? Your face turned blue for a while there"

I used to be indecisive. Now I am just not sure ...

Lindal, do you use travel agency or you book online? 850 for this coming Tet is great price since we wanted to go back for Tet as well and we were told the cheapest price is 950 with United Airlines. However, there is a still penalty of 250 per ticket if you have to change anything. However, we move our date back to after Tet and still no price available yet. I am sure it won't be over 1K per ticket since it will be a slow season.

Also, I was told that although American airlines offer lowest price but the stop-over is long (usually 8-9 hours) and the service is not up the the same par to that of their Asian counterparts. Many good things are said about Eva Airlines and Japan Airlines. I have flown them both and also with China Airlines and I have no complaint so far. Cathay Pacific used to be a great airliner too but they seem to loose the competitive edge

the flight i saw monday night was from continental online. The layover wasn't bad either. 2 hours at each place but there is stop over in detroit or minneapolis and then hong kong or tokyo (you can pick). Total flight was still 27 or 29 hours though!! My cheapest flights were booking direct with the company online...

So prices are around $800, give or take. How does an American airline make any money? The frequent flier miles from going a trip to Vietnam is going to guarantee a free ticket to anywhere in the USA. I'm also surprised that prices haven't jumped up due to higher demand because of the lower prices.

Some below 700..

Miles Depends on the airline.. I just gave up on Delta.. got tired of them screwing me out of miles... Son and I both flew a code share partner of delta (Korean Air) in April and they said no miles while on the Korean Air flights..

Flights in the US can be really cheap now too.. look to see if spirit flys where you live or near there.. they have some seats for as low as 20 bucks...

Yea, I wasn't able to get any miles from my 2nd or 4th trip (Singapore Air) but it's okay--the tradeoff on the cheap prices was good enough for me. I wished I could get the miles...as many times as I've flown I'm sure I would have earned a free trip by now!!!!
