hey guys i had a couple of questions to do with after recieving my EAD...

- i have my AOS interview in 2 weeks (Oct 9th), should i wait until i have the interview and then look for a job and apply for a SSN? or can i just apply for jobs and SSN right now? will my SSN change when i get a GC?

- what happens if i have been accepted for a job and i dont have my SSN yet, will employers take that into their decisions?

- i know i have to apply for a SSN, how do i do that? what forms do i have to fill in? does it cost anything?

Thanks in advance! :star: nearly there!

You SSN will not change when you get your greencard. yes you should apply now. Yes you should begin looking for a job if you wish. Your employers will need your SSN in order to deduct taxes from you so you should get it first if you can. It does not cost anything as far as I can remember. Google your nearest social security office and bring all of the originals with you.

You should definitely apply for SSN right now,if you want to get your job asap. I suggest you wait till you get the SSC, cuz it would seem sketchy to the employer if you don't put the number on the application. Depending on the job, your SSN can also be used to run background check BEFORE you are hired.

Your SSN is like your fingerprints, it will stick with you forever, and there is no difference whether you get it before or after the interview. The only difference is your original card will be restricted "Valid only with employment authorization", and after you get your green card you can replace the restricted card. There is no fee for a SSC, and the form you fill out is SS-5.

2-year green card application:

07/29/2009- Mailed I-130, I-485, I-693, I-864, I-864A, G-325A, I-765 via USPS.

08/21/2009- Recieved RFE for I-485 (issued August 17th).

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”
