Are people adding their immigrant-spouse to their insurance right away? I called my insurance and they said that it would go up $40 a month for a "Foreign License" fee....should we just wait for her to get her Mass driver's license and then try to add her on then? Also they said that it would go up by 100s!! if we cant give a driving record from the native country---how have other people been getting this driving record--have people been having trouble???

VERY IMPORTANT

If you used to drive abroad, make sure you bring your driver's license with you, and IMPORTANT when you go to the DMV or BEFORE giving your current driver's license to the DMV, make sure you MAKE A COPY of your driver's license, some insurance companies will use that to give you a discount so you won't be look at AS A NEW DRIVER. they will count your past driving experience in determining your rate. ( That was with Farmers Insurance)

I'm with STATE FARM in Canada which is actually is a US insr. company.

So when I move down and apply for Insr.I'm hoping they will be able to gather my driving history so I wouldn't be considered as a new driver...

just hoping...

We just signed up with Nationwide, $100 per month for both of us. Sadly, in NC, we were told that my husband will be considered a new driver even if he has license from India. I think NC doesn't take into account any foreign driving experience we might have. To save some money for a while, I just added him to our back-up car that I used to drive in college. Old car's insurance cost usually less than newer ones.

it went $50 up for me even though i got license, they say after a year they would bring it down because i am foreigner. But i don't trust on them, we are with progressive. these companies are thieves.

When my hubby added me up in his insurance he got a discount for the reason that married guys are lower risk. My hubby gave the insurance my US driver license.

I added both my husband and a car he owns to my policy after he got his DL here. They never even mentioned his driving record, or lack thereof. Our insurance together is now less than mine was by myself. Go figure.

We use Farm Bureau. They added my hubby to my policy and it didn't change at all. I already had full coverage because of my daughter. Our premiums run about $335 every six months.

I'm with State Farm, and adding my husband didn't cost any extra. They added him as an unlicensed driver (!), and we just updated them with his stateside info when he received it.
