Hello, Everyone!!

I got my green card over a year ago. I got my ssn when I had a J-1 visa. I did update my name right after I got married and I still had the j-1 visa. I when to the social security office when I was filing for the green card and asked them if I had to come and get a new ss card when I had my green card and they told me that they wouldnt change my ss card. I was filing for a job last week and the system said that I had an invalid ssn. Does this mean that I cant work??? Do I have to inform the ss office that my status has changed?? Should I wait until I get my 10 year green card since I will be filing in 2 months??

Please, help me.

thank you!!!

I would phone SSA first and see if the number really is invalid or not. I was told the same thing once when applying for a job and called - and the number was fine and still valid - the employer got a false negative from the system. The same may have happened to you - or it may be related to your J-1 status expiring. Definitely go in and update your status though - you are no longer a J-1 but a PR. Bring everything as if you are applying for the first time - you will get the same number but a new card. Don't wait until you get the 10 year card - they wouldn't change the card for that but you can just notify them that your status has changed again when you get the card. You do need to have a valid SSN for work, though, so you need to check it out. Good luck.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

Thank you so much for your answer, Kathryn.

I just came back from the SSA office. My SSN will be updated tonight at midnight and I will get my new SS card in 2 weeks.

I love this forum.
