But as an aside...6 of you at the Cheesecake fact and only 5 are paying? You got off light imo...

I agree! I'd kill for a bill that small!!! That wouldn't buy lunch for 3 people here!!!

Just don't go out with them again, brown bag it, and save money... you're gonna need it! ;)

Well I'm sure some wouldn't like doing it this way but for years (22 years) I worked with a group that periodically did "out to lunchs" just to get away. It was understood before hand that whatever the total we divided it up evenly between us all including the tip. If you couldn't afford it on that day you could always ask one or the other of us to front your part till you could afford it.

Sure one might just get soup and salad and the other a steak but it wasn't about the money it was about getting out and away and some comaradare and every enjoyable. In fact I miss it tons :/

When I've gone out with work mates, usually one person is the collector (someone good at math to make sure we aren't shorting the tip). And usually we would end up over with the tip.

If you run into problems like this frequently, I recommend separate checks. Tell the waitress up front, because I've gone out with friends and had the waitress roll her eyes at us when people needed to leave and asked for separate checks.

The waitress came back with our cards (3 of us) and the cash (3) saying we were short. Total $50 in cash, and $66 in credit cards, which left about $22 short of the $138 which included the tip. So somebody who paid cash wasn't being honest. Two guys ordered beers ($4.50 a piece) and one guy's meal alone was $15 - I don't want to have to pay for his tastes. I knew the lunch was going to be costly so I ordered more conservatively and drank water. I'm pretty sure I know the culprit - I've watched him stiff on the tip more than once. I'm thinking next time one of us should take charge of the bill, collecting from each person the money, but that means that person might have to say to this cheapskate that he's not putting enough in to cover tax and tip.

are you also metrosexual by chance??

metro WHAT? My hands are rough and callused and I prefer a $4 burrito from the local taco stand, but I do sometimes cry watching a movie.

BTW - interesting read on the definition... (I had to look it up to even know what you meant)

For some time now, old-fashioned (re)productive, repressed, unmoisturized heterosexuality has been given the pink slip by consumer capitalism. The stoic, self-denying, modest straight male didn't shop enough (his role was to earn money for his wife to spend), and so he had to be replaced by a new kind of man, one less certain of his identity and much more interested in his image -- that's to say, one who was much more interested in being looked at (because that's the only way you can be certain you actually exist). A man, in other words, who is an advertiser's walking wet dream.

I definitely don't fit in that category. Most of my clothes are from Target.

A group of us at work (6) took one of our co-workers out to lunch today for his birthday. We go out for lunch like this without incident about once a week but today the money was short, so some guys ended up throwing in more cash. This was at Cheesecake Factory so it wasn't cheap - the total bill with tip was about $138. I got a burger ($9) and slice of cheesecake ($6.50) - and ended up charging $25 on my card. It was just embarassing to have it happen on this guy's birthday and to see us bicker over the bill. Anyone have suggestions on how to pay a bill as a group that keeps everyone honest? (some places won't do separate checks).

we do the birthday lunch brunch per quater. each person is responsible for their own bill. we do seprate checks. the resturant normally will charge 15% gratuity that avoids us chipping more in for the tip.

MY only question is - who pays $6.50 for a slice of cheesecake???

Have you HAD cheesecake from Cheesecake Factory? *heaven*

Joel

ohhh yessssssssssssssssssssssssss

as a group its also understood up front your paying your own tab. unless its clearly stated- normally in a e mail that the boss is paying. this normally happens when he gets some extra perks from a Vender - example chase. they are sooo good to us. anyways, if its a small group of us going of someone is a broke azz that day. we either find a cheap place < souper salad . 5.99 per person < all you can eat > or we spot the person til the next lunch outting.

People never seem to remember to add in the tax. The server often gets shorted.

I HATE cheap f#ckers. I always end up paying more. You just have to be an a$$ and point out that Bill didn't kick in enough.

You can also split the bill 6 ways...... no matter what they ordered.

hmmm it seems $138 plus 20% tip = $165.60 divide that by 6 = $27.60 each.. hmmmmm???

Actually, $138 included an 18 percent gratuity - the bill with tax was about $117. One guy's total order before tax, tip was over $21 while some people's tab was only about $10. He claimed he put in $25 in cash, but even if he did, that's not enough to cover tax and tip, let alone pitching in for the b-day person.

Rock, scissors, paper will solve any disputes. (hit the annoying one with a rock, cut the body up with the scissors, use the paper to provide an alibi "Honestly officer, I was working....look at the date and time on this paper")

I like the way you think. That sounds like a perfectly logical and reasonable solution to me.

By the way, are you familiar with the band Haunted Garage?

why 18% out of curiosity? Seems like such an odd number...most ppl would just round up and leave the 140.

If you're not gonna split the bill evenly across the board, and you're not gonna mention it to cheapo, and you can't find a restaurant to split checks (this I"m still stumped on as to why), then you need to reconcile the fact that you're going to spend your whole lunch monitoring what everyone ate, how much it all cost, and what they put in...

I've been to several restaurants who won't do separate bills for everyone, too much hassle for the server apparently. And then someone always ends up putting in extra cash for someone who either left early, or who forgets about tax and tip.

Some restaurants will include a 15% to 20% gratuity for groups over 5 people even.

When I worked in an office I'd usually get someone else to add up my costs because my math skills suck, but then I'd always include a rather generous tip when possible. We were always such pains in the ####### when we went out en masse, and we'd like to be allowed back ;)
