hey,

just wondering if anyone can give me any pointers on how to write a resume to find my first job in the states? any points would be appreciated :)

The format of your resume depends on a number of factors, such as the type of job you are looking for, how much experience you have relevant to the job, your educational background, etc. I'm not sure there are many rules on this topic, but certainly lots of opinions. Some may tell you to keep your resume to one page, but I'm not so sure that is important personally. Some say to send out as many resumes as possible (power in numbers), others say to send resumes with specifically customized cover letters only to positions/employers you have researched. My opinion, go with the latter on that one (quality, not quantity).

In our case, names gave away the fact that my husband is foreigner. Also, since he had no experience in US, lot of recruiter initially asked if he was authorized to work in US. So we finally added "Employment status: Green Card holder / Permanent Resident" in his resume.

Now I wonder how many times his resume was rejected prior to adding the employment status..Lesson learned for us..

Depending on where you live, you might find a career center to help you write your resume. Many cities have this service available to you (my fiance is going to such a workshop for free tomorrow, in fact). Otherwise, I suggest checking your local library for books on resume writing, as they're going to be more reliable than junk on the Internet.
