I just found out that our case is on its way to the embassy in Islamabad. :wow: My concern is this: Me & my fiancee feel it is best to quit his current job (hopefully by end of Sept) to concentrate on him getting 'Oracle' certification. Do you think the embassy will look down on this? We both agree that him getting this certification before he comes here will make him more attractive to employers along with the Bachelors he has. He wants to continue database adminstration and this specific training will be beneficial. I wouldn't think that it would be frowned upon to quit work for awhile to get further education in his field. We both work in the same kind of financial industry but just different areas, which is funny we had that in common. Tell me VJ'ers what you think?? When he is here he will have to wait a whole year to get in-state tuition. I think he would be considered out-of-state once he arrives and shouldn't take any classes yet (TOO expensive). Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

The consulate will not care whether your fiance is currently employed or not. Probably the vast majority of K-1 applicants are unemployed. It will not affect his interview in the slightest.

Moving to Embassy and Consulate Discussion...

Improved USCIS Form G-325A (Biographic Information)

Form field input font changed to allow entry of dates in the specified format and to provide more space for addresses and employment history. This is the 6/12/09 version of the form; the current version is 8/8/11, but previous versions are accepted per the USCIS forms page.

not recommended to quit job before having VISA in your hands, the interview is not guaranteed.

Very good advice!

The consulate won't care. You might.

I say NEVER quit anything, sell anything or make any plans requiring payments of money until the visa IS IN YOUR HAND. To do otherwise is a fools errand and ESPECIALLY with male applicants from Pakistan. There are countless cases where the applicant ends up in AP after the interview for months or even years. You cannot predict now when the visa will be in hand.

As far as tuition and residency, this will depend on his school, etc. Alla was admitted to her university (a private university) 5 days after her arrival here AS A RESIDENT because we demonstrated (even before she arrived) that she was not moving for educational benefits. Being that they are a private University they can change any rules they like. They also gave her a 50% GRANT for her education (Masters in English so she can teach here) She received a Pell Grant for the balance (except $1200) 3 days after getting her Green card (4 months after she arrived) and it was retroactive! With her grant from the school, her tuition was less than resident's fee at UVM, pretty good as it is a very prestigious and expensive university.

There is no need to "wait" for one year. Check around. YES, it is true that the University of Vermont would have required her to be here a year, and the VERMONT student assistance corp made her wait a year for STATE student aid, but otherwise all these things are individually addressed and you need to do your homework. Makes a good thing to do while you wait for your visa.
