Hi ya'll

So I went upstairs to our parents apartment today to get some vegetables to make dinner.. and there was a pepper.. looked like a green pepper.. smelled like a green pepper.. cut it all up into little pieces.. then I realized it was not a green pepper.. it is some kind of hot pepper... then my face started to go numb.. and after a little bit, it started burning like hellfire.. after 45 minutes the burn went away.. but now my hand is burning.. I've tried everything.. washing thouroughly, rubbing my hand through ice, butter, olive oil.. and it still burns !!! so badly!!

It's been burning for 6 hours and I don't know what to do!!

Can anyone help?

This is what the culprit looks like..

I dont know what the plant is - have u tried bicarbonate of soda? that usually will ease most prickly burns (stings, rashes, sunburn, chicken pox) - dissolve in water and either put affected part IN it or dab ON it.

Or get down the pharmacy and get calamine lotion for it

Ah... looks like a jalapeno pepper.... if you've eaten some, drinking milk can help. As far as your hands go, I'm not sure... may have to just wait it out.. :(

Whatever you do, don't touch your face, especially your eyes. You could try soaking your fingers in a bowl of milk, other wise some cortaid.

for your hands if you've already washed them with soap and water and they still burn, soak them in a bowl of milk until the burning stops. It's the capsaicin that is making it burn. Capsaicin in an oil so just water wont cut it.

The milk is mildly acidic which counteracts the alkalinity of the capsaicin. This is why they serve sour cream with most mexican dishes.

alright thanks guys..

i'll try the soda.. then the milk.. because the milk here in algeria, you have to boil it first and then let it rest because the milk here doesnt come pasteurized...

sorry b. dean.. no ranch dressing here.. havent found anything that resembles it either, i'll have to remember that for next tip.

yes rob I made sure not to touch my face or eyes at all... my sister in law made sure that I didnt because she did that before lol

It looks like a green chillie pepper or a serano pepper or cayennes that aren't ripe yet (they turn red) - all of which are extremely hot and would cause the burning sensation you experienced. They are hotter than a jalopeno but not as hot as a habenero. Be careful what you put on because some lotions can actually intensify the burn. It will take a day or so before you stop feeling the burning. If you find that it doesn't reduce or go away, do seek medical attention. Good luck.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

Don't worry about boiling the milk Icey... you're NOT going to drink it!!!:P

Last week I took the seeds out of a jalepeno pepper with my thumb and under my nail was burning so bad. It eventually went away but it hurts!!! I don't know what you can do... but I hope it goes away soon.

On another note any news about your RFE?

iceyspots,

Looks like what my wife would call prik. (JenT - jalapinos are sweet peppers by comparison).

You needed something to absorb the capsacin - water just spreads the stuff around - but it sounds like your skin has already done the absorbing, and you're unusually sensitive to the stuff.
