Hey guys,

Just wanted to write something that is very frustrating and could happen to anyone unfortunately.

Few days ago we received a mail adressed to some name and has OUR EXACT adress from the USCIS. I knew there is some kind of mistake right away since we live in a private house and there is no one under that name. If we lived in the building it would be a different story, thinking someone else's mail from a different apt was in our mailbox, but that's not the case.

So I decided to open the letter and it was a letter adressed to that person stating that they have a GC interview next month. I called the USCIS letting them know that I received someone's mail with OUR adress on it and that maybe they can resend the letter to the person to the CORRECT adress. The customer service told me that they can NOT do it cause I don't have the info like their date of birth so they would have to miss their interview and then they'll get some letter stating that they have missed their interview and that they can be rescheduled. I got pissed and explained to the lady that it's a very important even for someone and it's not fair to which she replied " there is nothing we can do about it but I do understand your concern"

So something like this can happen to any of us and it's just frustrating.

Just wanted to vent

There seems to be no accountability with the USCIS. They have a typo, you pay. They lose your documents, you pay. They send important documents first class mail with no conformation and if it gets lost in the mail you pay.

My compliments to you for trying to help the poor AOS applicants. It is possible an online search may find the applicants, but it would be a daunting task in New York.

Does the letter not have a receipt number on it?

Remember that the USCIS misinformation line can't typically handle anything out of the ordinary and have an incredibly annoying habit of giving inaccurate answers when they don't know what better to say so don't assume that nothing can be done about this.

Did the first person you spoke to just give you an answer or did they transfer you to a more senior officer?

Horrible and sad! I would check online first the receipt number to see if USCIS has updated the file. This way maybe the person will know that they should receive something soon. If the person can;t be found otherwise, return the mail and put on it that the person does not live here -wrong address.

Yes, send it back to USCIS and include a note stating that the person is not known to you and does not live at your address. That's probably the best that you can do for the addressee.

All you have to do is write WRONG ADDRESS over the address window in big bold letters (use a dark marker) and drop it in the mailbox. They will return it to sender. You don't need to address it or stamp it.

Before you do that, did you try checking the receipt number status on the uscis website? I think it tells you whether the person is signed to receive CRIS email updates. If they do, they should have gotten an email and should be ok, even if they didn't receive the hardcopy letter.

This happened to me too, but it wasn't for the GC interview it was for the initial K-1 interview in Montreal.... I got this girl's interview information sent to me, her name was on it but my exact address. They must have been working on both our cases the same day and inputted my address under her name. I e-mailed Montreal to explain what happened, they apologized and asked me to throw it out, they would send her a new one. Of course, 1 week later they did send a new one - to MY ADDRESS again!! I e-mailed them again to say I got it twice, they apologized again. Poor girl, probably missed her interview date. I tried to look her up online but she could have lived anywhere in Canada, so I had no luck finding her. They can be very imcompetent

I think you broke the law when you opened a postal mail with someone's name on it. If it's NOT addressed to you or something close to your name, do NOT open the envelope! Write "This person doesn't live here!". You just admitted you committed a crime online! Please edit your post real quickly!

Just remember, life over there in VN is NOT real! Your money will be worth a LOT less once you get back over here. Back to reality, cowboy!

If someone else received my mail from USCIS, I would rather that person attempted to be a good samaritan and reunite it with me than return it to the hell-hole that is a USCIS mail room where, lets face it, the likelihood of the returned mail marrying up with the correct case file and adjudicator is slim to nil.

Yes, opening someone else's mail is illegal but the Feds ain't exactly gonna come leaping through the front window at dawn for doing it. The OP is trying to help the intended recipient.

You have every right to feel frustrated. You know what it's like to wait and to count on something very important. Arghghg I can't believe how they treat it so lightly without offering to research what could have happened. UNREAL!

Try calling USCIS back. When I get someone that is not helping me…I say thank you, hang up and call right back. Most of the time I get someone that is more helpful.

I think it is great that you are trying to help them. I would want someone to do that for me too.

Waiting.....Waiting....waiting....waiting....and more waiting..........
