Hi,

I am in the process of gathering the necessary paperwork to apply for an Adjustment of Status.

My question is:

Is a friend who is not a family member, nor does she live with us allowed to be a co-sponsor for the I-864, Affidavit of Support, or must the person co-signing be a family member?

Thanks for your reply!!!

Yes, a friend can be a co-sponsor or joint sponsor as stated by the USCIS law. The joint sponsor must fill out a seperate I-864.

Joint sponsor . A joint sponsor must execute a separate Form I-864 on behalf of the intending immigrant(s) and be willing to accept joint and several liability with the sponsor or substitute sponsor. A joint sponsor must meet all the eligibility requirements under paragraph ©(1) of this section, except that the joint sponsor does not have to have filed a visa petition on behalf of the intending immigrant. The joint sponsor must demonstrate his or her ability to support the intending immigrant in the manner specified in paragraph ©(2) of this section.

Sure, the laws are on the USCIS website. You will need to scroll about 2/3 down to find the inability to meet income requirements.
