Are there any Irish on here with very normal Irish names (in Ireland), but not normal at all outside of Ireland? How do people manage with your name and do you get tired of correcting people if it's often mis-pronounced?

Our girls have very normal Irish names, but they are pronounced completely different to how they are written. We love their names and hope they will too, but a little part of me worries that they'll spend the rest of their life correcting pronunciations.

Their names are Sinéad and Róisín - how would the non-Irish people here pronounce those? I'll tell you the right way in a bit ;)

I think people will know "Shinade" because of Sinead O'Connor - "Rosheen" will have problems, I'm sure!

I know an Irish Sinead here in LA and she doesn't have too many problems, it seems. Here friend Saoirse is not so lucky. I grew up with a girl called Siobhan and she was always correcting people.

I know someone named Róisín! I love the gaelic spellings. :luv:

My son's name is Ciarán. (But it's not spelt that way.) Guesses anyone? lol

NO one here can pronounce my name. Drives me nuts.

Haha. Looks like I took a long time to post! Trompe beat me to it.

I can tell you from experience - I am constantly spelling and/or pronouncing my name (not Irish, but..) I've heard all the jokes/puns - hated the name growing up, but in the end, its nice having a unique name as an adult.

Sinead as in Sinead O'Connor the singer? Shin Aid. Right?

No idea on the other.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. My maiden name was very german and people mispronounced it all the time. I got tired of saying the "h" is silent or t-h-e-i-s is like tice not thesis. Eventually, you just answer to anything when it's not important in the least.

Life's just a crazy ride on a run away train

You can't go back for what you've missed

So make it count, hold on tight find a way to make it right

You only get one trip

So make it good, make it last 'cause it all flies by so fast

You only get one trip

My hubby's last name is O'Crualaoich (Crowley). He has to use the Irish spelling for legal reasons so I have to spell it and pronounce it multiple times. Sometimes I just say Crowley, but then people get confused. I love Irish names, we'll probably use Eibhlln (his Mother's name) for a daughter if we decide to have kids. She'll just have to deal with it, we'll teach her to be proud of her heritage!
