A secured credit card would be a good start if you don't have any credit history.

I added my husband to one of my credit cards as a joint account holder. It was a process though-we had to send them proof of his PR status. This was a Discover card-from what others are posting it seems as though there may be cards that are more readily available. We really didn't want a secured card, or a card with high fees or interest, so we decided to just add him on to mine. We were told that this would help establish credit for him.

Two things which helped my wife who had absolutley NO credit history (unheard of in Ukraine)

Secured Credit Card. Many banks issue these, you can also find them online. You pay a fee up front and also give a deposit, the deposit is usually in the amount of your credit, it is basically a prepaid credit card. But they do report to credit agencies and it does build you credit history.

The other thing is to open some accounts such as cell phone or cable TV in your name. You will likely need to make a deposit and all of these will take some time to establish credit. After one year my wife was able to, just recently, qualify for a department store credit card. It is more didffficult right now to establish credit than in years past.

A credit card secured by money deposited at the bank is the best you'll be able to obtain. The alternative is one where your spouse is co-signer, but even then the credit limit will not be large, perhaps $500.

My husband has been using Captial One for about 5-6 months now. We have been on top of all payments in full and been using it regularly to build up his credit history. He was only offered 500 credit limit.

Anyone know how long it will take for him to qualify for other cards? We recently tried AE, Chase and Bank of America, but all denied.

It's amazing how quickly immigrants become Americanized... next thing you know, they'll in knee deep in debt looking for ways to negotiate a payoff or file for bankruptcy.

Stay away from credit cards.

While your information may be helpful, that's not what the OP was asking for. :) Besides, there is nothing American about a credit card.

I couldn't get a Capital One card because there was no credit history at all.

However, I was able to get a $500 credit card with only a $99 deposit and a $39 annual fee from my account with Bank of America.

Hopefully that will be good enough to get the ball rolling in establishing a credit profile!

Stay away from credit cards.

I often see people saying this, and it's simply not necessarily good advice. With this logic, you should also warn people not to drive their cars (they could get into an accident) or walk across the street (they might get hit by a car).

Credit cards are not only harmless, but are safer than cash/debit cards and can be profitable to the cad-holder (cash-back cards). They only become a problem when they are put into the hands of irresponsible or uninformed people.

To the OP, a secured card is definitely one way to establish credit.
