OMG! Japan is safe? How did they do that?

When you take the sub there, good luck!

Safe in what respect? Earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tropical storms, freezing to death, being robbed or kidnapped, etc.?

"Japan scores well on the GPI for extremely low levels of violent crime, and has very strict gun-laws in place. Robberies are almost non-existent when compared to figures from other westernized industrial nations, although statistics are criticized for being unreported by some watchdog groups."

Maybe the above is the discrepancy in the report and your experience, Niels.

4. Iceland

Iceland went bankrupt in 2008 and had to be rescued by the IMF. Its stock market index was down 93%

in króna terms and 96% in Euro terms.

Guess it wasn't all that "safe" from financial disaster.

I don't think I've ever seen a moderator bait another user on VJ before. There's a first time for everything, I guess

Australians are a tough and wild bunch. I am not surprised as violence is more acceptable there. The liberal courts and judges do nothing to serve decent sentences.

For example: A few weeks ago a guy who was drunk, hit his wife with a beer mug and basically left her to die before going to a footy match. He was sentenced to five years. Whereas, he would have received a minimum sentence of life here.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Yes, but it is safe as far as violent crime and likelihood of terrorist attack. I think level of violence is the primary thing they were measuring for.

The index includes the number of homicides per 100,000 people, potential for being the target of a terrorist attack, level of hostility to foreigners, educational attainment and unemployment rates and amongst many others indicators. While subjectively measuring the world's "most peaceful" nations, the Global Peace Index takes into account many factors associated with personal well-being and safety. The GPI does not factor in natural disasters

I'm surprised Denmark was ahead of Norway though.

I'd take a terrorist attack over a catastrophic financial collapse of the entire country any time.
