Our I-485 interview is scheduled for October 14, 2009 10:15 AM at the Buffalo, NY office. This is a standard I-797 notice. We received the notice about a week ago. The notice date is September 10th.

Today, we received a form directly from the Buffalo office in the mail. It is dated September 17th. It is labeled Form G-56 and informs us to appear for an interview on October 13th at 11:15 at the Buffalo office. It has a list of things to bring to the interview. Some of them are checked and some of them aren't (I assume it's a standard form and they just check the applicable boxes). It says we should bring: Passport and I-94 of foreign spouse, Copies of yours and your spouse's Federal Income Tax Returns for the following years 2008, Evidence of common residence and shared life (including photos), your spouse (it's addressed to my wife, the foreign spouse). The rest of the letter simply states about bringing a translator and to send it back with an explanation if we can't make it.

Is this a second interview? a replacement? Is this similar to an RFE and they want to have a preliminary interview? Anyone had this before?

G-56 is a call-back notice - I don't know if you have already gotten an interview notice yet (you probably will, if you haven't) - nonetheless, it is an interview request. (Kind of like an RFE mid-stream, they may have looked at your package and are giving you a heads up what to be sure to bring.)

Sorry I wasn't clear. We have received the interview notice. But the G-56 date is before the interview date. How can we get a call-back when we haven't even gone in the first time.

My research also shows everyone else getting g-56 after the interview. What does it mean if it is before?

Thanks for the reply.

From what I\'ve seen (which isn\'t that many) it is possible/probable an IO looked at your case and noticed some things he/she will need to review. Can\'t speak to the dates being one before the other. You\'ll definitely want to attend the earliest date though.

Noticed the double post.
