Can I use the mac osx on any hardware? That is, hardware of my choice. End of story and the reason I will never buy one.

Edited by Booyah!

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

That Apple SDK is very limited. In fact, alot of their APIs isn't compatible with APIs that works with many things useful an engineer could work with. It looks like those SDKs are mostly for multimedia.

Booyah, I'd no more try to convince you to buy a MAC than I would try to convince you to move to Chicago.

Clearly you're not the MAC kind of guy....and the world is fine with that.

Did you know that you can easily run any version of Windows on a MAC, and that many people run OS X on their PC?

But does EVERYBODY need to be able to (and are they capable of ) selecting specific hardware?

What percentage of people would you guess BUY a computer vs the people that BUILD a computer?

Do all PCs allow you to change every piece of hardware to your specific choice...or are there certain compatibilities that have to be considered?

It's just like cars. Most people buy them...but people with specific desires, build them. Does that make a specific car bad?

Here...follow this link for full access to the rest of the SDKs along with a lot more goodies.

https://developer.apple.com/mac/

I just took a quick look to find them, and was surprised that you don't even have to register to download them AND code examples.

So I've already debunked your claim that Apple requires AUTHORIZATION and EXPENSIVE FEES.

Your still haven't answered why a MAC could "never be used for engineering".

It's absolutely fine to admit that you don't have a clue.

I understand what you are saying and it is a great unix based OS.

However, it is extremely limited in functionality and customization.

OK...explain what YOU mean by limited in functionality and customization.

What functionality and customization does your OS have that OS X doesn't?

Seriously...I don't claim to know everything. I'd love to know what I'm missing out on.

The Apple OS is basically preconfigured and most settings are locked into the system; as in, set by apple. Even something as simple as configuring network adapters is quite customizable under windows. I have the freedom to easily customize advanced settings that are usually locked by apple.

The beauty of Vista or windows 7 is that I can adjust the system to suit my needs. I can also pick and choose hardware to suit my needs. The best feature of them all is that windows systems are much cheaper to build and customize. A simple component or modification of an apple product can cost hundreds.

The PC config I am running would cost $6K to purchase from apple.

I had a look at the newegg receipt but it has too many details on it. Considering the only thing I know about spooky is that he is from Boston, is married to someone from Brazil, and has this huge paranoia about his own privacy, yeah not going to happen.

I'm a designer, and while the trend in my industry is to use macs, I still stick with PC. I regularly went back and forth between PC and MAC, and really there's not significant differences anymore for most users... except that Apple products are expensive and if you want to run their OS you're limited to few software choices. They don't do low-end anything in the computer market. Most software makers intend to launch on Windows, and to run them on Mac you get to fork out more $$$.

I'll use either, but I won't spend the extra money just to have a Mac. Quality for less money on PC, though.

Currently running a Toshiba P305-s8919 and it works nicely for work purposes and some gaming (my only complaint is the slow hdd). My custom desktop is better suited for gaming but badly needs an OS upgrade when windows7 is released (I opted to skip Vista on it because it was built right around release when drivers were still a mad problem). It's a few years old (q6600 release), but can still run new games well.

Don't know what you're planning on for use, but check your software/games to see whether they really use the multi-core systems well. Most programs still don't utilize quad cores the way I'd like... so don't throw your money away on something you might not need. You're likely better off dumping your money into other components, like a quality case and water cooling system to overclock with (or install some case lighting :P).

That's still a pretty general statement. What specific advanced settings for your network adapter can't you change on a Mac?

This has turned into a MAC or PC debate, lol.

My brother (who is so far left he makes Obama look like Limbaugh) bought a Macbook pro. I asked him how much it cost and he said about $2,000. The specs were not that impressive and I'd imagine you could get a PC (desktop) with the same specs for about $600. But don't quote me on the price because I am not a computer expert by any means...

India, gun buyback and steamroll.
