Is that what your're running Marc? I'm not up on AMD processors, but that looks like a nice solid rig that doesn't break the bank. If that's what you have, how do you like it?

Im running an intel dual core 2 6750. W/2 gb of ram. w/OC'd 8800 gtx. I upgraded a year or so ago. The one I listed is more up to date. AMD runs a little hotter but is slightly faster and a little cheaper.

Here's my setup:

Intel Core i7 920 - OC'd to 3.8 Ghz - about $200

Thermaltake CL-W0121 Water Cooling System - I think this one is $200

Asus Rampage II Extreme - Forgot the price, know it's like over $200

G.Skill Trident DDR3 6GB Memory - Triple Channel - $194

MSI Geforce GTX 295 2GB, 448-bit x 2 - About $500

XCLIO 2000 Black &Ttitanium Case - Forgot the price

CoolerMaster 1250 Watt Power Supply - Forgot the price

nVidia Tesla c1060 Super Computer (PCI Express Card) - 1,400

To me, I'm not a brand specific guy. I look at specification more so than the brand. AMD Opterons has like 6 cores per CPU block. I said to myself, I would rather make a system that can be for the most of my money (aka overclocking).

In the past AMD was the OC king. Now it's the intel. And, Intel i7 is faster than the AMD systems. Not only that, their transistor sizes are 32nm now. This is a few generations further than AMD. And, they consume less energy than the AMD due to the transistor sizes.

I do lots of things, other than games. Such as video editing for weddings (freelancer on contract), and for my full-time work at my real job requires me to bring work home as well (I'm on salary so it's a 24/7 job for me). Engineering requires lots of analysis and simulations.

OS 9, is that the "Tiger" OS? If so, you can upgrade it to snow leopard for $30 bucks. Check it out!

OS 9 (Known as "Classic") came before all the animal names were added and the Unux (NeXT) based system that is known as OS X.

Plus the latest incarnation of OS X (Snow Leopard) only runs on Intel based computers. Prior to switching to Intel, Macs were based on Motorola's PowerPC chip.

Sorry MAC. MACs aren't design for engineers because they're weak.

Engineers needs scalability for their projects. The horsepower provides a way for consumers to help improve the visions of the engineers. The money are used to further the research to improve or enhance the processing capabilities so that we may be able to solve problems of the future.

At my workplace, nobody uses a MAC. So, it goes to show a MAC isn't designed for scientific application in mind. Ask an Engineer (someone who is either FE/EIT or PE licensed) and they'll say MACs are practically useless.

To William,

The Intel Core i7 is a quad core.

First of all...I didn't see where the OP was looking to build a computer for engineering. Second...your argument for PCs over MACs sounds like it's purely based on personal bias. Just because none of your co-workers use MACs, doesn't make them "useless". Only one guy in my neighborhood drives a Ferrari. Does that mean Ferraris are bad cars?

I'm not an engineer, and don't know what the needs of an engineer are. So I yield to you to tell me in measurable terms (facts, not opinions), why a MAC (capable of running Windows) is the wrong choice for engineering.

1. MAC in terms of scalability is very limited. Motherboards cannot be modified or upgraded. In an Engineering profession, when they must work in the cutting edge cannot use a MAC simply because of this.

2. MACs require special authorization from Apple or register with Apple to develop software for them. Many homegrown software cannot be run on a MAC.

3. MACs are expensive. Engineers have the responsibility to do a benefit and cost analysis to fullfill a customer's need.

4. The chips inside a MAC are designed by mostly PCs.

5. Opinions? When are Engineer decision based on opinions. It's actually the management decision to decide opinions. However, in terms of tools the PCs would provide more useful programs due to the homegrown software.

6. Microcontrollers, Embedded Systems for Cars, HDTV conversions for broadcasts at the signal hardware are all based on PCs to program them. This is why engineers prefer PC mostly. The MAC lacks tools for this.

1. MACs are already engineered to have cutting edge performance out of the box. I had no idea that Engineers have to build their own computers all the time.

2. Completely wrong. You can download the SDK for free, and begin developing software. If you want to use the Apple logo, you have to pay fees and get authorization,

the same as with Microsoft.

3. MACs do tend to be more expensive, but they're also more stable, less prone to crashes, and easier to maintain. Doesn't that factor into a cost/benefit analysis?

4. What? What? What does that have to do with anything? My wife's clothes are mostly designed by gay guys in Italy.

5. Yes, you still haven't given measurable FACTS as to why a MAC is a poor choice for engineering. I could understand if you gave an example of a specific application, but you're using a rather broad brush to paint MACs out of engineering.

6. Ah....you say "prefer". Prefer means it's a PREFERENCE, kind of like an opinion.

I'm sure there may be some specific instances where an engineer would need a specific PC in order to execute his/her work, but to say that MACs can not be used in engineering, is absolutely an opinion, not a scientific fact.

Looks like I'm talking to someone who has not background on computer hardware. When you know how they're designed, come back to me. Tiresome to explain how transistors work, controller works, etc...

I have to say, I hate nvidia GPS. Their cards and drivers are garbage. Wife's laptop, has an nvidia GPU, issues and BSOD. My previous PC major issues and BSOD. Swapped to newer Nvidia GPU 9800 before upgrading, issues and BSOD.

Even since I have switched to ATI I have not had one single BSOD. Actually I have never had any issues on a pc or latpop using an ATI card.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

I have a degree in computer science. I'm well aware of how computers work. I'm also aware of how BS artist work.

Anytime someone says, "that's very difficult to explain" that's a translation for "I don't really understand it".

So come back to me when you actually know what you're talking about.

I'm still waiting for you to empirically explain why a MAC could never be used in engineering. Point is, you can't. You haven't even been able to come up with a specific reason why YOU could not use a MAC.

You still haven't addressed your claim that "Apple requires fees and authorization" to develop on their platform.

Here's a link to download the SDKs. http://developer.apple.com/sdk/

You don't even have to register to download them, let alone be authorized or pay a fee.

Just admit it, you have no idea what you're talking about.
