Well, here in Texas, it's my understanding that they want George Washington removed from the Social Studies curriculum completely. They do however, want to require bible study.

good for you ....

Yeah, awesome.

your complaint has been formally registered with vj ... the internet forum that has jurisdiction over your local school district.

next ...

What's the problem?

I think I may have actually discovered that by accident once or twice already. ;)

Now you understand my world. Before I started teaching there was an appalling statistic about how many Americans didn't know that Mexico bordered the US to the south. I refused to believe it. It had to be how the question was worded, I insisted. There was no way you could turn on the TV and not know that Mexico bordered the US to the south. It just wasn't possible to exist in the US and not know that.

Then I began teaching. The level of ignorance I observed was shocking. And so much of learning is based on prior knowledge, so fixing the problem seemed impossible. It was so depressing I left the US.

Now I'm back and I have more hope, but the ignorance is just as bad.

My point is, I'm not at all shocked by this statistic. I can't explain it, but I'm not surprised by it.

:(

It makes me sad, too.

And it makes me sad that there are a lot of good teachers out there, but they go unrecognized. it is an uphill battle all the way...

i don't know what the answer is, or how it is different in other parts of the country, but i know in NJ & NY, it is so hard to fire bad teachers... people who aren't doing their jobs are allowed to sit in classrooms for 30 years, retire, & collect gov pensions, and meanwhile they've done nothing. Some teachers have even assaulted students, are on suspension, and STILL collecting full pay. It should be easier to fire people who don't do their jobs.

"75% of Highschoolers can't name our first President in AZ"

Did Arizona ever have a president?

Or did you mean to say "75% of Arizona highschoolers could not name the first president of the USA"?

Who was the first president of the USA? Now that you brought this subject up, have me curious. Was even Arizona around during that era?

No, Arizona was not there during that time. There was just a big, bottomless pit.

Now you know where all the tea baggers and birthers come from.

And creationists and evolution-deniers.

 The Grand Canyon, to be exact.

I posted a story not long ago about a teacher from that area who was feeling-up little girls who was still collecting full pay.

The NEA union has wrecked the education system in the same way Auto Unions helped run the auto industry in the ground.

At a cursory glance it seems the main difference between the two is, The Auto Workers Union did not tell GM "How" to make cars.

THE NEA does control education to a large degree. (I believe they are the largest Union in the country)

But it was bigger then, there was no room for Arizona. Just like not having a 4th of July in Russia.
