Hi everyone.

I am very sad because my husband found out this morning that his mother passed away. He is on a plane right now on his way back to Jamaica. The saddest part about it is that he had a ticket to go down for a week on monday. He was just five days short of seeing his mother one last time.

She had been sick with headaches and dizzy spells, but nobody thought she was on her deathbed. She was only 51 years old. I still don't know what she died from.

So, my question is...what should I do? I want to go down and be there for him, but the money just isn't there. I don't have any experience with Jamaican funerals or customs.

Acrow, I'm tearing up as I read this. My husband's mom had the same symptoms on and off. She past away last year at the age of 49...she had uterine cancer that spread every where...I know how you feel about the money and wanting to be there (my husband was not able to go to his mom's funeral)... but he's there and hopefully his family will help him through this. If you want to talk send me a message.

Awww Acrow so sorry to hear this news. I really feel bad for your hubby I know his heart is so heavy right now. How long will he be gone because from past experiences the funeral normally takes bout two weeks to happen? Some of the ladies who are actually from there can tell you if I'm right or wrong but when I was dating Roc and some of my other Jamaican friends down there when they lost love ones it was about two to three weeks before the funeral and wake actually happened. I never attended a funeral but I did attend a wake and I’m sorry to say I loved it. I came back like that is the way to go.

It started at sunset and first this band came out and started singing gospel hymns and then after that there was music playing and every one was drinking and eating. It rained and they set up a tent and kept the party going. People from ALL over came and well we left in the wee hours of the night morning and they were still going. I heard it can go till sunrise. I know money is tight so you can only do what you can do but if there is a way for you to join him just to support him that would be great too.

I have a general question and this is not necessarily related to me but how many of your spouses, SOs, etc. have no interest in obtaining a citizenship and want to just remain a permanent resident?

My husband is not really interested in obtaining citizenship. He would I'm sure if I badgered him enough, but it's not on his things he wants to do list. I work with a woman who is only a permanent resident. Been living and working here legally for well over 20 years. Has a great job here. Just finally considering citizenship. Not being a citizen hasn't hampered her from obtaining nice jobs all over the country. I said that to say this, I'm not gonna push it if there isn't a SIGNIFCANT reason for him to do so.

How about 45 years....some Jamaicans just don't want US citizenship...I never asked my husband about it...I guess he'll tell me if he wants to go that route.
