Airtran Airways Announces New Service to the Bahamas and Jamaica

ORLANDO, Fla. (September 3, 2009) — AirTran Airways, a subsidiary of AirTran Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: AAI), today released schedules for new service to Nassau, Bahamas, and Montego Bay, Jamaica.

Pending final government approval, AirTran Airways will begin flights to Nassau on December 17, 2009, and to Montego Bay, Jamaica, on February 11, 2010. Both destinations will feature nonstop flights from Atlanta, Baltimore/Washington, and Orlando, and connecting service from over 40 other AirTran cities.

“We are extremely excited to be connecting not only Atlanta, Baltimore/Washington and Orlando to these popular tourist destinations, but in fact, almost our entire network,” said Kevin Healy, senior vice president, marketing and planning.

AirTran Airways is already a leading carrier to winter sun destinations, with flights to Cancun, Mexico, San Juan, Puerto Rico, Phoenix, Las Vegas, New Orleans, and nine cities in Florida. The airline currently operates the nation’s largest low-fare carrier hub in Atlanta and offers flights to more destinations than any other carrier from Orlando. The airline also offers service to 22 cities from :dance::thumbs:

I don’t think we have to worry too much above “government approval” they've slowly but surely been approving the other AirTran related Caribbean expansions so I continue to remain positive that they will continue to approve them all.

It looks like to the untrained eye (which is mine) that they are "attempting" to fill the direct flight hole that Air Jamaica left earlier this year. Like jawi876 stated, Delta needs some real competition. Their prices haven’t fallen to far below 600+ dollars since AJ pulled out of Atlanta and I’m guessing; sadly, its been like that every where AJ doesn’t exist anymore.

Speaking to Bunzarelli's reply regarding flights into Kingston, it’s a truly outrageous, that its not at the moment on anyone's radar.

Honestly, I'm shocked that AirTran would even consider such an aggressive expansion in these times.

All I can guess is that like Air Jamaica making the confusing decision to stop flying from major hubs, the decision wasn’t made based on the traveler, it unfortunately came down to their bottom line "where can I make the most money and save the biggest cost".

AirTran is targeting the "tourist", more specifically, the winter Caribbean traveling tourist. Last week the FAA approved them to start flights to Aruba and they are already advertising with a mini blurb in their press release of one "digging their feet into the warm sand".

The situation with Air Jamaica's privatization/divesture is at a level red critical point. Layoffs are set to begin as early as September 30. :(

When I first heard about AJ leaving Atlanta I was so selfishly PISSED off... How could they leave "me" with only Delta for direct flights, American Airlines and Spirit a.k.a. Soul Plane with ridiculous layovers in Florida...

But then I thought about all my family working for Air Jamaica, driving tourist, working in the restauarants, in the hotels, etc., etc., that would be directly affected by these changes and instead I begin to pray that someone, anyone, would buy AJ or take over the abandoned routes.

Reduced number of and higher flight prices have hit and rippled through Jamaica's economy mercilessly. Prayerfully the "minor detail" of government approval disappears by the scheduled date, AirTran will hire those laid off by Air Jamaica and the dollars will begin to once again pour into the economy... I take spirit gladly now... just thankful to the most high that I can still get there, get anywhere. :content:

I have no doubt that when fuel prices subside, there's an obvious improvement in the travelers’ financial picture as well as it becoming once again lucrative to fly in/out of all airports... Airlines will once again come back to thinking about pleasing and making it easier for the traveler to get to point a to point b without all these shenanigans!!

(Serenity steps down off her soap box)... :D thats my share for the day...

EVERYONE IN ATLANTA, PLEASE, PLEASE, BE CAUTIOUS, AWARE, STAY DRY & SAFE... My prayers to all of those who've lost property, who have been injured or lost loved ones in this Monsoon of a storm!

EVERYONE IN THE WORLD... BLESS (F)

I was told this by a worryfreevacations.com rep in June. She said that Airtran would definately be picking the cancelled chartered flights out of St. Louis (USA3000 BOOKED BY WORRYFREE!) going into Mobay. They have started making the changes at Lambert Already
