ok this is a strange scenario: I went to pick my daughter up at a new friend's house this afternoon. She was at the park so I had to wait inside the home with the mom. I thought the mom was actually kind of cool and the type of woman I'd probably end up being friends with. Anyways, I made friends with her pug immediately and we couldn't get enough of each other. :luv: She said the dog's name is Cleo for Cleopatra which led me to tell her that my husband is Egyptian. Well she said her husband is from Syria. Bla bla bla more talking ensues, then just before my daughter and the new friend come to the house I said, "i wish i could get a dog like this but my husband won't let us". She asked why and I said, "well he's muslim and so am I though I don't see anything wrong with it".

lemme tell ya her eyes just about popped out of her head. She asked "why can't muslims have dogs?" and I started to tell her but then the girls came and I was anxious to go pick up our chinese food so I cut off the convo, said my goodbyes and was on my merry way.

Here's the question I have: they've been married for 14 years. The last name is definitely muslim. Why on earth would it shock her to hear that a muslim has a problem with a dog in the house? I mean I know there's no consensus on the matter and i certainly don't see the difference between having a cat or a dog, they both lick their azzes right? You'd think the topic would have come up at some point don't you? And I'm not even certain that her shocked look was about the dog since it started right after I said the word muslim.

Any thoughts? I hope it's not what I think, especially since it makes no sense given her situation, since my daughter really got along with this girl and she tends to be super shy so I'd like this friendship to last you know? Plus I'd like to hang out with this woman! Other than the eyes popping out she seemed so cool.

my husband is in florida right now for an interview. he is now experiencing the trip from hell!!!!

his flight from pittsburgh got held up 4 hours due to mechanical problems with the plane. then of course that made him miss his connecting flight so he had to wait 3 hours in detroit waiting for the next one.

finally he got to orlando and he was wore out. then he thought he could pick up his rental at the airport and then found out he had to be shuttled like 10 miles away. he was already mad and upset about the flights but now he had to get a car from far away.

now he finally got to the hotel which was oceanfront hotel but never even got to see the ocean cuz he was so late it was dark. he showered and took a short nap and went to eat. the hotel is in melbourne so thats an hour drive from orlando.

now for the funny part.....he got stopped by the police for being in a stolen car!!!! he was like, but look, ive got the rental car papers and everything. but u know they have to check out everything before they can let him go. so finally he got the ok and went to eat.

his interview today went well but now he is afraid its all a sign not to take the job there because of all the bad luck he was having. now he knows what kind of luck i have everytime i go to florida. he didnt beleive that every trip i take to florida turns out to be the trip from hell.

oh wow talk about a bad day!!!!!! My husband would be convinced that someone put the evil eye on him!

What do you mean you hope it's not what you think? You think maybe she was shocked about the muslim part rather than the dog part?

I don't think the topic would have necessarily come up. I probably wouldn't know about it if it weren't for VJ.

Well before I asked my daughter what the new friend's last name was I immediately assumed (and of course we all know what happens when we do that!) that they were not muslim and yeah I thought it was due to the muslim part which kind of confused me. Maybe I'm just being pmsy and should just let it go.

Well not all muslims feel that way. I have two small dogs and my husband knows it and they aren't going anywhere anytime soon.

Well I know that but I also know that my husband's feelings on the matter aren't all that unique so I figured it was common knowledge that dogs can be a problem. I mean maybe it's just that I've been on here too long. lol. We've had what, like 4 or 5 lengthy threads on that topic alone?

Perhaps it's a Muslim name but it doesn't necessarily mean they are Muslim or even close to their Arab/Muslim roots. Or maybe the husband isn't religious at all and never thought to share something trivial like no dogs with his wife? Could be anything. With some Muslims having dogs isn't a big deal. My husband loves dogs and if we had a house we'd have one. His only condition is it can't sleep in bed.

Well, that's certainly true! :P

My husband doesn't have any issue with cats or dogs in the house and I seem to remember at one point asking him about Islam and pets and he didn't even seem to really know what I was talking about. Maybe it's a regional thing or depends on your social circles.

lol that's what my ex said each time I brought home a new puppy. :) After about fifteen minutes of listening to the widdle puppy cry in her crate she'd be snuggling up to both of us in the nice warm bed. Both of us were just too wimpy to say no. :innocent:

I guess so. He did grow up in a very strict part of town and was super strict about certain things when he first got here. He's definitely loosened up a bit in the time that he's been here though so maybe I'll slowly work on him by showing him cute puppy pics.

If they're Syrian, then maybe they're Orthodox.

Doodle said they had a Muslim name but some names are universal. Hmmm...what was the last name, doodle?
