Hello everybody:-) I hope ya'll doing good.

I Have been granted asylum last Feb. 08, got my new I-94 card, EAD, SSN, then i got married afterward and got my husband's last name. I changed my last name on my social security card, and that was it. Now I am applying for a refugee travel document, and I am confused whether to use my old family name or my new one? Since my name is changed on the social security card, Would it cause a problem if I use my old name in the Refugee travel document? If so, then how can i change my name with the USCIS? I called them and they told me that i have to file for a new EAD! that's an additional $340, and I am not sure if that's all I need to change.

Do i have to change my name with the USCIS, or can i just use my old name when i file for a travel document ?

I would appreciate any opinion you may offer. Thanks in advance!

Did you get your green card yet? My husband came here as a refugee and has to wait until he has been here a year before applying for the green card (for now he has the I-94 and EAD), but not sure how it works for asylum cases. As for your name change, I would highly recommend you change it with USCIS because if you plan to travel outside the country and then come back, it could cause you a lot of problems coming back into the US if you go by two names. Have you changed your name on your state ID yet? The best thing for you to do is make sure all your names match up as you know there are a lot of hassles for anyone from the middle east coming into the US and you really want to try and avoid that.

This is my best advice to you and I wish you luck.

Hi.

Almost the same thing happened to me. After i was granted asylum and got my I-94 card, i got married and my last name changed. I called the USCIS to ask them how to change my name and they told me the same thing. But 4 months ago, i applied for a travel document and sent them my marriage certicicate to let them know that my last name has changed. all the letters they sent to me, had my new last name, but i Just got my travel document today, and it has my old last name!!! is it because it has to match the name on the I-94 card? or is it a mistake? what did u you do about your travel document?
