551 Stamp? Can wife travel with Immigrant Visa?

Hi all,

My wife has been in America for almost 3 weeks now and I am planning to go to Hong Kong for business and want her coming with me. She came to the US with me on her Immigrant Visa (CR1). Is it ok that she travel with me? Any concerns or problems? Her Green Card has not come yet, as it has barely been 3 weeks.

She has a stamp stating she entered US, but what is a "551" stamp?

Any advice would help.

Thanks

Amit

On the letter I got before my green card came it said this is not a visa and cannot be used in place of a visa. My guess is you wait until that green card is in your hand, but I'm no expert.

The I-551 is NOT a visa it's a temporary GC and CAN be used for travel.

On the visa page in your wife's passport there will be an entry stamp showing the date she entered the USA. If you read the visa page there is a line that says" On endorsment acts as a I-551 and is valid for 12 months" That is a temp greencard and is good for international travel and employment in the US.

All she needs is her passport that contains the visa to be re-admitted into the US.

Have a good trip.

She can travel internationally with her CR1 visa since she's got the entry stamp on it at POE.

You do not need to wait until she gets her GC.

You wil want to make sure she has the required documents (ie.. visa) to enter Hong Kong

YMMV

IIRC - the GC for an I-130 will show up within 30 to 45 days of the POE date. Keep your eyes peeled for a one page letter droning on about 'card production ordered'. Sometimes this is sent, sometimes is not.

If you are fussing about and want to leave next week, get an infopass appointment TODAY (for next week ) and then ask for an I-551 stamp in the passport at the INFOPASS appointment - the stamp is a form of GC.

If you can hold off your business trip until the actual gc arrives, IMO, that's the best scenario.

GOOD LUCK !

Actually, there is no I-551 stamp. The visa itself is a temp I-551 (green card) when stamped with the entry stamp (class of admission and date).

She was ready to go and did not need anything in addition - for the US side.

duh - i feel stupid now, as I forgot a basic thing...

The CR-1 visa stamp already allows for multiple entries - I cant remember the 'exact' validity time span (6 months to a year? ). So, really, no 'extra ' thing to do - I apologize for giving bad advice about an INFOPASS appointment, earlier ..
