Hello everyone,

I would like to get my driver's license from California, I now have an international driver's license I got in my home country.

I called the motor vehicle commission to ask them what kind of proof I would need to bring, and they said a visa or so. I explained my status ( married to an american citizen, I94 expiring at the end of the month) and they said that I would need to wait til I have my green card in hand to apply for a US driver's licence/ state ID.

Does anyone of you have experience with this? Anyone had the same problem, and was able to bring other proofs of legal stay?

Thanks a lot!

Take care!

My wife did showed them pretty much same thing and she got state ID in the mail few weeks later. As for her driver license (learner permit), she took the written test in Thai language...it took her 3 tries though to finally get it.

I don't know if it varies from county to county. But I know what I read about applying to me in Los Angeles. For a learners permit (for those who have never had licence before) you need at least 60 days left on the proof you use for eligability. For a full licence you need at least 90 days left on it. Acceptable proofs are I-94 from a visa, ead card or greencard. I sucessfully got my temp licence with my ead card. I thought the NOAs were not accepted but I don't know where I got that from. But the ammount of days valid stuff I read on the website. I know ead works cos it worked for me.

The local DMV (Santa Ana, CA) wouldn't accept either my wife's EAD or her Welcome Letter from when she got approved (or any of the other USCIS paperwork we brought). They said they would only accept the Greencard or a valid I94.

They also insisted the name on her SS# match the name on her green card (Maiden vs Married).
