We have a place already - the irony of my getting mugged where I did, is that usually, Huguenot is a very nice neighborhood. I would estimate that the police where there in under 5 minutes of receiving the 911 call (this is in Staten Island, by the way) from a lady who saw what happened, though at this point I was in a state of shock and everything felt like it was draaagginnnng... oooon... and ooooooonnn.... haha.

When I was living in CT, I would catch the train down to SI every Saturday night, then back up to CT on the Sunday night. I was usually travelling between about 11pm-2am - catching the Metro North from CT to Grand Central, then the 6 subway to Bowling Green (lower Manhattan), then walking over to the SI ferry and catching that across, then if Jesse couldn't get me from the ferry terminal it was onto the SI Railroad (which is the train my mugger followed me off). About 8 months of doing this every weekend in the middle of the night, and nothing ever happened. Even after what happened, I still feel safer walking around Manhattan at night then I have ever felt walking through Sydney at night.

There is nothing 'wrong' with Hispanics and Blacks - rather with the environment and social conditions many of them are forced to endure. No race or ethnicity or culture has a monopoly on crime, however more represented some are than others - it is not inherent in their being but in their social and physical environment.

There is nothing 'wrong' with Hispanics and Blacks - rather with the environment and social conditions many of them are forced to endure. No race or ethnicity or culture has a monopoly on crime, however more represented some are than others - it is not inherent in their being but in their social and physical environment.

This argument was never stronger in the era of Public housing, but those days are pretty much over (in most places) as most Public housing has been spread out in the modern era rather than consolidated in high rise neighborhoods.

There is also another side to the coin.

IN cities all across the country Minorities have fanned out, moving into areas that once were all white. These areas that were crime free just a few years before suddenly had higher rates of crime and as this environment changed, more and more white people left.

I have an area not too far from my house which is a prime example of this. It was a typical suburb

complete with shopping mall with skating rink in the center. After robberies and even shoot-out in the mall, it has lost all it's anchor stores and is down to only a few, even the stores nearby seem to pass from one business to the next each one a lower-grade business than the last.

This is the very same environment which... just a short time ago was one anyone would want to live in.

I can think of another area which was white then black, and now it has gone back white due to city sprawl and is a jewel again.

So what does all this mean? It means, I have trouble blaming "environment" when these very places have so much potential.

What is the cause of it? My guess would be "breakdown" in family structure.

When you don't have men in the home, boys don't learn how to be men.

When you don't have men in the home and money is limited, things around the home fall in disrepair.

Houses in disrepair lower house prices for all and soon it because a area of cheap houses, attracting more of the same.

That is highly offensive to those who are poor yet do not represent their share of crime. A violent behavior is endorsed more in some cultures than others. Gang banging or ghetto thuggery is certainly not the norm or as prevalent in rest of the developed world.

Some states have lower crime rates, lower homicide rates than European countries with strict gun control. They all coincidentally enough have one thing in common. It's not because they are the wealthiest states either; quite the contrary actually. Hint: total opposite to DC.

NYC alone has more murders than those killed by firearms in Australia, Canada, UK and New Zealand combined.

Is that right?

299 homicides so far this year in a city of 8.5 million people doesn't sound like a large number.

I was being a bit sneaky. I compared homicide rates to homicide by means of firearms in these three countries combined. With a population of 119 million people.

I actually cringe a bit to think of how many people heard my story and immediately asked, "was he black?"
